The High-A Timber Rattlers come out seeking a 4th consecutive win over Quad Cities, with LHP Antoine Kelly throwing in Game One of today's doubleheader. 2B Tyler Black is 7-for-15 with 3 doubles and 7 RBIs in his last 4 games:

This is Antoine's third outing and I am sincerely hoping for a  noteworthy outing from the young hurler. I have high hopes for his place in the lower levels and, if he can start really putting it together, it's a 'look out' kind of prospect.

We saw the kind of progress we'd like to see in start one to two - though, his strikeouts were down in game 2 versus Beloit. Currently 12:6 k:bb ratio. This is a game I'd love to see him dominant. A man can dream.

And, I should mention, perhaps a low-hanging goal for Antoine is a healthy full season after spending a good 60 days on the IL last season before earning his way to Zebulon.

And let’s toot that horn:

Antoine Kelly has gone five complete innings of 1 hit, 4 bb, 7 k ball. Timber Rattlers lead 5-0.

THIS is what I am personally looking for: stacked success and improvements in the overall end results. An early glance says he is still dancing around the zone (43 strikes thrown in 80 pitches). Excited to review this work!

The Low-A Mudcats attempt to snap their 2-game losing streak to the Hillcats, with this week’s series presently knotted at 2 games apiece. RHP Alexander Cornielle (2.16 ERA, 1.92 WHIP, 8.6 K/9 in 8 1/3 innings) makes his 3rd start of the season, while 2B Zack Raabe enters with a .483 OPS:

AAA Nashville tries to take a commanding 4-1 series lead over Charlotte, with native Wisconsinite RHP Caleb Boushley aiming for his 2nd straight solid start (5 innings, zero runs, 2 hits, 1 walk, 6 Ks last time out). SS Brice Turang, fresh off yesterday’s 5-hit performance, is batting second:

Knarrly stuff in Appleton for Game 2. Through 5 ip, 1 er, 6ks on 71 pitches w 49 for strikes. Men on 2nd and 3rd with no outs as Tristen Peters and Yeison Coca back-to-back doubles have given the Rattlers a 2-1 lead.

Major leaguer 3B Luis Urias joins the Shuckers for a rehab start, as the team tries to claw back to 2-3 in this week’s series in Birmingham. LHP Nick Bennett makes his 3rd start (3.38 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 5.6 K/9 in 8 innings), while yesterday’s hero RF Garrett Mitchell (game-winning 3-run homer) bats third:

Secretly imagining Luis Urias batting alongside Felix Valerio, Joey Wiemer, and Garrett Mitchell for an entire season.?

I have been admittedly down on Mitchell lately but this little burst has been exciting. Hope he can keep it going. And what more can you say about Wiemer and Valerio? They just continue to impress.

Understandably, he really didn’t look all that sharp until this series. And, well, in this series he’s looked fantastic.

Carolina pitching - primarily the bullpen - has had a fairly rough series as they give up 5 more runs after Cornelie leaves the contest. Brustoski with another 3 walk and 3 k inning. He has walked a lot of batters in his few outings to date.

A tough loss for Biloxi as Bennett gives up all 5 in the 4-5 defeat.

Nashville just absolutely keeps on cruising. They are a well-oiled Triple-A machine right now. Boushley with another very strong outing - going 5 ip with 6 k’s and the lone run a solo shot. The bullpen of MejiaBarker, and Sanchez go 4 scoreless with 5 k’s and merely 1 hit and 1 bb over the four innings. That bullpen is so dang good for AAA level baseball. Lights out.

I wonder if Brustoski ends up back in extended spring training until he can work through the control issues. I'm not sure tossing him out there every couple of days is doing anyone any good at this point.

Timber Rattlers boxes are interesting in that they scored a run an inning but there wasn't really an offensive star in the doubleheader. Definite team effort.
