May 2 Roster Reductions

We are 10 days away from a mandatory roster reduction - from 28 to 26

I assume Milwaukee will choose to send down one pitcher & one hitter

Barring injury, I would guess Milner & either Brosseau or Hiura

Who else might be candidates to move back to Nashville?

Does Suter have an option left?

He’s struggled more so than Milner to start the year

Is the 13 pitcher limit in effect starting May 1?  If so, they need to remove two pitchers.

The only two pitchers with options that make sense are Milner and Gustave.  I think they'd ideally like to have a roster spot or two to shuffle between all the 40-man pitchers with options.  That will inevitably occur with some kind of injuries, but if they value the most roster flexibility immediately, Urena may be the odd man out.  Would be a tough break given he's pitched well enough to be on the roster.

Whether they can send one down for May 1 or not until Urias comes back, Brosseau or Hiura has to be the position player out.  Peterson has been bad offensively, but being a versatile LHB without options, he's got a longer leash.

I don't think anybody has done poor enough to warrant a DFA and Suter has a proven track record so will go with the rather boring choice of sending Gustave and Milner down. The position player change won't happen until Urias is ready to go.

Yep, Either May 1 or 2, rosters go back to normal (26 man, 13 pitcher max).

2 may. conveniently allows clubs to complete their weekend series with their opponent with 28-man rosters, and if the downsizing results in optional assignment, it works in favor of the minor league club because they're off that day.

I have asked this several times over the years, but have never, ever gotten a response. But I need to ask again ... why do you never capitalize anything on your posts? I work as an editor, and while I try to avoid being the grammar police, this really irks my proofing OCD LOL.

Many have asked, none have been answered.

I would send Cousins down because he would benefit the most with more regular work and his start to the season has been less than stellar.  They really need him to be the guy he was last year, and with the short spring training and infrequent work so far, he needs time to get in his groove.  Four wild pitches in 6 innings is unacceptable for a high leverage reliever and with Gott off to a good start, he's kind of taken over in the spot Cousins had.

I assume Brosseau gets optioned to make room for Urias.  Despite being able to keep 14 pitchers, I think the Brewers would be wise to keep 13 position players and 13 pitchers.  I'd send down Ashby.  He's allowed 12 hits and 8 walks for an unsightly WHIP of 1.765, and switching him between relieving and starting is tough.  If you want to stick in a 6th starter you go with Urena for now or DFA Urena and bring up Small.

Doubt Ashby is going anywhere. Even with an ugly WHIP the runs aren't scoring (3.18 ERA) and he hasn't really had a notable impact on wins/losses (-0.04 WPA).

I think the Brewers brass will give their top pitching prospect more than 11 innings before making any kind of move this year.

Agreed. Other than too many walks, Ashby has been extremely effective in his swing-man role, and the Brewers rotation will eventually get his by the injury bug, which will give Ashby a more permanent spot there. Or perhaps they'll decide to deal from that major position of strength to add a bat to the lineup? In any case, Ashby is helping this team win, so I don't see any reason to send him down.

Despite the 14 pitcher max, i still think we only keep 13 based on roster construction. Brosseau is the obvious guy to go down for Urias, but from there the only position player that would make sense to send down is Hiura. It's possible but I just don't see that happening. I think the most likely candidates in some order to trim from the roster are Milner, Gustave, Urena, Cousins, Hiura, Peterson. Ashby I firmly believe isn't going anywhere. Gott has been probably the most trusted reliever beyond Box/Williams/Hader. Suter is going to stay for length and the whole clubhouse thing. I included Hiura/Peterson above but I really don't think those guys are going anwhere. Most likely are probably Urena and Gustave, I was really hoping Urena would thrive in a bullpen role but thusfar he just hasn't.
