Yuku cutover issues (Latest: Splitting/merging topics; cuss filter)

Here's some code you can add to the board style sheet to reduce the height of posts a bit:

/* reduce height of posts */

.ip {display: none;}

.user-avatar img

{width: 75px;

height: 75px;}

td.poster-detail, td.post-content

{padding-top: 0;}

I typed something longer about big post size and wasted space at the bottom, but it was eaten by the internet as I was prompted to log in again and then got a message that this thread was moved. Anyway, I'll echo requests to shrink overall post size - it makes scanning a page much harder and time-consuming.

Did we get rid of the 'last post by' feature? In other words, the thread name would include whomever posted last.

There's talk of paring the Last Post information on the main forum page. It's been getting adjusted as the day has gone on. What you see might also depend on which browser you're using.

In the thread lists in each forum, Last Post information should definitely be there.

I think that for now, we should just sit back and enjoy the ride. There are a lot of things to get going and adjust. As an example, I see that as I type this, Brian is tagging threads in the Major League forum. Great feature!

How do I add a link to my post? I tried in the "altercation" thread but ended up having to italicize the link and then I got stuck in italics when I tried to edit the post.

I always just cut and paste the link, I don't do the fancy thing others do and give it a name. However there's an infinity sign like thing on the posting window, it's between horizontal rule and remove hyperlink... click that and it should be self explanatory.

On the who posted last issue, I've been trying to figure that out all day. I had it yesterday, started messing with the fonts using the CTRL-scroll, nothing fancy.... when I got home from the coaches meeting last night the name of the last poster was gone. I didn't notice it till after I was messing with my avatar, but I don't see how messing the fonts or adding an avatar would mess that up.

A Couple of Posts Up

edit.

1. Here's how you do it, copy or the cut the url from the top of the web browser.

2. Type in what you want it to say in your post

3. Highlight what you just typed

4. Click the Insert Hyperlink Button

5. Paste the URL into the URL box

6. Click Close

Just a quick comment to say that I'm also hoping that displaying the "last post" username is one of the next adjustments to be made. Seems like an information gap without it.

In fact, it's several chain *links* http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Personally, all I look at is the new baseball icon on the left. It really doesn't matter to me when the last post was, nor who made it, since 1, there are likely other new posts before the last one, and 2, I'm going to read a new thread regardless of who made the last post or when it was made. So I'll probably end up just using user css to remove the column entirely.

Oh, those are chain links, huh? Looked like swimming goggles--I guess I could've moused over them to see what popped up.

Thanks.

Just to clarify a little more on links…

You'll see three fields in the box for creating links. The first one is for the URL; that's self-explanatory. The title field creates a tooltip. You can add a few words of additional explanation that'll appear when a reader hovers over the link with his/her mouse. The text field shows what appears as part of the message.

Example:

Fake link to nowhere; hover over me

I'm not sure if tooltips on links will show up in IE 6. Thankfully, there's reason to hope that IE 6 will soon face a merciful end.

casey, I have ie6 at work and I can see the "This is tooltip text" over the fake link you posted. IE6 may be around longer than you would like as I have heard here at my work that we are not allowed to download IE7 because of some conflict with however our IT department has all the systems setup. I am sure there are other people out there in the same situation I am, at least I hope, I need tabbed browsing.

Yeah, it's the work crowd that will be the slowest to convert. I don't understand why IT people are so afraid of allowing employees to have access modern browsers for basic web browsing, though. While IE 6 and IE 7 aren't meant to coexist on the same system, the alternatives don't mess with the OS. Off the top of my head, Windows users have Firefox, Opera, SeaMonkey, Flock, K-Meleon, and Safari available to them.

I'm glad to hear that the 'title' attribute (which creates tooltips) works for links on IE 6. I've used it in posts to add the author, site, and date, for instance. "Title" is supposed to work on just about every HTML tag, though. IE 6 misses out on supporting the attribute on a whole bunch of them.

there are likely other new posts before the last one

I find a lot of times when I go back to the topic list after reading a thread, there's already a new post. Depends on who posted it whether I go right back into it.

I don't think we'll have to worry about the 'last post' information in the discussion lists going away. Its look may change from time to time until Brian lands on whatever works best, though.

One issue entails what to do about extremely long usernames (the ones without spaces). Those will probably have to be truncated or made scrollable. If they're left alone, they'll affect the widths of the other columns up and down the page.

Like whizkid, I'll often pick a thread to read based on whoever may have posted to it last.

Unless you're constantly checking threads, I guess I just don't see the point since it doesn't list all the new posts that have been made. I bet the odds are better that someone you want to read didn't make the last new post than that they did.

True, but it's not about whether you'll ever see the intermediate posts, just when. If the last poster is someone I want to read I'll do it now, if not I'll catch all the unread posts later.
