rhp josé ureña major league deal

I remember when he was a very hot name on this forum just a few years back.  And it seems immediately after he gained that reputation, the bottom fell out.  Over the last three seasons he has a 5.52 ERA, 5.02 FIP, 78 ERA+, 1.78 K/BB.  Maybe foreseeable as during his peak years in 2017-2018, he had a 3.90 ERA but the FIP lagged way behind at 4.68.  Have to wonder if the Marlins got any reasonable offer for him after 2018, or if the mediocre peripherals always had the rest of the league a bit doubtful.

Does the new CBA give these type of players an automatic opt out date? I can't imagine Urena will stick around in the minor leagues very long because he has had some success in the majors as a starting pitcher. Even last year he made a series of quality starts for the Tigers earlier in the year before scuffling into June,  going on the DL and missing nearly all of July and August.  There will always be a need in the major leagues for depth guys to come in and make a few starts.

Doesn't matter now, as he was just added to the big league roster. I imagine he's now the long man in the pen/7th starter. No options, so if he doesn't work out, you cut bait and move on. They must like what they see, though, considering the quick elevation to the ML roster.

source?

under the previous cba, he would qualify for an opt-out clause, as he has more than six years of mlb service and he finished last season on a big league roster.

Doesn't matter. He's on the Big League roster, and is out of options. Source is literally every Brewer beat writer on Twitter.

i'm a bit frustrated that the brewers selected josé ureña's contract ahead of opening day . . . especially if he doesn't make his first appearance of the season in any of the initial games.

let's assume that the brewers will be going with 14 pitchers and 14 position players on opening day. it's very likely that starters aside, they won't get around to using all of the pitchers in the initial games.

instead, the brewers could have assured ureña that he'd have his contract selected before the conclusion of the club's opening road trip, recalled an optioned position player to have an extra bat, and optioned that position player when it was time to select ureña's contract.

Kind of what they’ve done in recent years, but with the DH in place, how many bench bats will actually get used?  Think this is a spot where the DH affects roster construction.
