Severity of Hall injury?

Recommended Posts

Late in the game it came out that he has a sprained right ankle...not sure if there's a link anywhere, though, since Jim Powell said it during the broadcast of the game. Sprains are tricky...he might be ready to play sometime this weekend, but with the All-Star break coming up, I wouldn't count on it. A DL stint is unlikely, but if he's not ready to go by the time the All-Star break is over, they can always put him on the DL retroactive to July 6 and call up Gwynn for a week or whatever.

Definitely stinks since Hall was starting to heat up, but since the Brewers face a righty for 2 of the 3 Washington games, they can use Gross in centerfield without much worry.

It just talks about basically what we already know, it is a high ankle sprain, although crutches and a walking boot don't exactly indicate something which will be a week injury and he's back in the lineup.

High ankle sprain? Time to trade for an outfielder. He's out a minimum 1 1/2 months and likely won't be able to run well the rest of the year. It usually turns out that he would have healed quicker with a clean break instead. The worst case scenario just came true.

I am not so sure.

High ankle sprains can take a LONG time to heal. I would guess he is out at least a month. Of course we don't know the severity of the ankle sprain - but they can be a real bother.

Any chance Hart plays any centerfield?

Jack is right. A "high ankle sprain" is 10 times worse than a run of the mill ankle sprain.

My guess is though they don't have an exact diagnosis yet. Even "normal" ankle sprains can cause plenty of swelling and pain the first 48 hours but they improve rapidly after that.

High sprains though can take months rather than days or weeks.

Let's use this thread to keep track of what we know about Billy's injury, DL speculation, what we know about sprained ankles, etc.

Let's use the Hall alternatives (Gwynn back up?) thread to discuss potential Hall replacements.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

I didn't mean to suggest that Jack was wrong to say high ankle sprains are worse than a run of the mill one. I just think it's a little too soon to assume that Hall will be out for at least 1.5 months and will be hindered by the injury for the rest of the year.

Per Rotoworld:

"Bill Hall was diagnosed with a high right ankle sprain after landing awkwardly while trying to rob Ryan Doumit of a homer in Tuesday's game.

A high ankle sprain can be a 6-8 week injury, though the Brewers refused to place a timetable on him today. They'll likely recall Tony Gwynn Jr. and have him share time with Gabe Gross in center field until Hall returns. Corey Hart can also play some center, which would open up right field for Kevin Mench. Jul. 5 - 7:50 pm et"

Let's hope it's not 6-8 weeks. It seems like pure speculation at this point.

If it's a high ankle sprain as per rotoworld we need to look for a replacement for Hall for the rest of the year. Not too many athletes in any sport are really fully recovered when they come back from this type of injury and the recovery period is often even longer than originally anticipated. 6 weeks would be a very optimistic recovery time. Next year for a full recovery is more realistic.

I would hope doctors would readjust their expectations if they are alway wrong. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Ouch. This seems like the worst kind of injury for a center fielder to have, although at this point we don't know the extent of the structural damage. Given Hall's less than optimal routes to balls I can't imagine him coming back at less than 100%. The depth of the outfield is a huge lifesaver here, but it's one less thing that DM has to offer at the deadline. Here's to hoping that Gwynn can handle playing any day. If he can't, is Brady Clark available to fill in the other side of the platoon?

Here's some semi-flame bait: If Hall wasn't so preoccupied with making a dramatic, flashy play would he have been injured?

I like to see every member of the team make an effort to get an out if they think they have a play on it. I'd rather have them try and fail than seeing them not try at all. It just so happens Hall got hurt when he was trying to make a play...that kind of thing happens all the time in sports. It definitely bites, but there's not much anyone could have done about it.

You could ask the same question about Corey Koskie last year, IMO. Every so often someone's going to get hurt trying to make a play. You just hope the injury doesn't scare them away from trying to make a play in the future.

This actually came up earlier in the year when he was crashing into walls all the time. I've been worried about this for a while. I don't think it's out of line. Probably deserving of it's own thread as I imagine the thoughts would be plentiful on this subject.

If you're bound to be injured, you're bound to be injured. Granted, Hall does take a lot of chances in the outfield because he has such great athleticism and eventually we all knew it was going to bite him.

On the flip side, if he catches that ball its a shot of adrenaline in the Brewers dugout, so I'd rather see him try than not try at all.

did anybody actually "see" the injury on mlb.tv or anything? I know it wasn't on MIL or PITT television so I only had Uecker to go with on what the play looked like.

Hall jumped pretty high using the wall to propel himself up, and when he came down he took the entire brunt of the drop with his ankles and it looked like his right ankle flexed and turned on him.

You can see the play on brewers.com. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

It was one of the Brewers/Bucs highlights on BBTN (it was basically LaRoche's two homers that were absolutely ripped down the line and Hall's injury), but the camera angle wasn't the greatest and their "Hall injured" graphic on the bottom of the screen pretty much blocked any view of Hall's angle as he landed. It did look like he came straight down from the wall, though...it wasn't a graceful landing, so I could definitely see how he sprained his ankle. Hopefully it's on ESPNEWS over the next day or so, but leave it to ESPN to put a shiny computer graphic over the action of the replay. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Wasn't JJ originally diagnosed last year as a "high ankle sprain"? I don't like the sounds of it one bit, and agree that if they do get some bad news with it over the next few days, another bat should be added, and not from AAA.
