Our Reclamation Projects

I was wondering what the chances are that some of the reclamation projects among the hitters will make it onto the opening day roster (or contribute significantly later in the year). Some of these guys only have non-roster invites now, while others are on the 40-man. I list the ones I'm interested in below, but feel free to add other players into the discussion.

David Dahl

Tyler White

Mike Brosseau

Keston Hiura (I know there's a thread dedicated to him, but he seems to fit into the group of hitters who showed something in the past but not lately.)

It is probably more wishful thinking on my part but I'll go with Luis Perdomo grabbing one of the couple open relief spots. With the Padres he had some great months in relief but would follow up with a horrendous month. Hopefully he is now healthy and can be consistent for a whole year. Not on 40 man roster.

Dave Dahl vs Jace Peterson is an interesting battle.  In the traditional NL I think Peterson runs away with that roster spot based on his obvious positional versatility.  However, with the DH I think it's more important to have a lefty DH bopper or pinch hitter a la Vogelbach or Dahl now rather than a lefty jack-of-all-trades like Peterson.

It's too bad though.  I'd rather give roster spots to athletic all-around baseball players in their prime like Hernan Perez and Jace Peterson than one dimensional sluggers like David Dahl, but I guess the MLBPA disagrees.

if you're seeking insight on hitters (and hitters only), it'd be helpful if the thread title was edited to reflect such.

hitting reclamation projects have a chance of making the opening day roster if rosters temporarily expand beyond 26 as expected. plus, there are currently two open 40-man spots, and if the brewers wish to grant justin topa major league service time and pay, they can recall him (not to report) and place him on the 60-day injured list to open up a spot.

Jon Singleton is another one to watch. Once a huge prospect that signed a big deal with the Astros.

if added to the active roster, jon singleton is out of minor league options and has been outrighted to the minor leagues before.

I know the Brewers must like David Dahl, but he looks like a thin-air slugger than a reclamation project.

His All-Star year of 2019 he had OPS of 1.000 at Coors, in 2018 his home OPS was even better at 1.051. He has been merely average (and completely terrible his last two seasons) outside of Coors.

I'm sure he could ride a hot bat right onto the major league roster, but I wouldn't expect much besides a middling bat which the Brewers are already chock full of.

I don't think Dahl is even an option.  Dahl plays only the outfield. The Brewers already have 5 OFs with the addition of McCutchen and unless they trade an OF or Dahl replaces Taylor, there is no room for him. The Crew needs to keep 2 spare infielders and a backup catcher along with two of the OFs (it sounds like the DH will be a Yelich/McCutchen/Renfroe combination).  Peterson plays 1B-2B-3B-OF.

Dahl has definitely had his struggles and deservedly falls into the reclamation category. A quick look at baseball savant has him at 66th percentile in sprint speed. About average fielder metrics wise and I his physical prime. I agree there's not a perfect fit on the roster. But a good depth piece with some meat on the bone in terms of jack of all trades.

Jon Singleton. Now that's a one dimensional slugger and I am here for it if the development in the Mexican league translates in any capacity.
