Softball Players: Important Message

brewerjamie15

First off, let me please say how proud I am of the guys on the team. I think we will be pretty good. We've got some good power, speed, and fielding. We can also excel at dropping singles and doubles on you all game long as well so, I'd have to say that we will probably be a tough team to beat.

Next, I'd like to remind you of our practice next Sunday @ Noon same location as usual, Hales Corners Park right by the pool.

Third, I want to thank you guys for showing up at practices like you have been. I know we can't make them all, other things pop up. I appreciate people letting me know of an absence by use of the thread or by inbox. I'd also like to thank those who went out and bought equiptment to play. Thanks also for your contributions in practice with drill ideas, willingness to play an uncomfortable position, etc. Thanks for paying your fees promptly either in person, or by mail.

I need to play tough guy here for a paragraph, so here goes. When I first asked guys if they wanted to play, we had 19 interested parties. I asked for a confirmation from people and the number dropped to 18. Out of the 18 players that remain, I've seen 15. I have 3 people whom I have not gotten payment from, nor have they contacted me about payment arrangements. I won't name players here, I will send them private messages asking for payment if they still want to play. I had set up team fees based upon the number of players who commited to me and now if anyone backs out, I get to make up their share of costs from my own wallet. I have to go pay the player fees (team fees are paid) this week Wednesday, May 3rd. If I have not been paid by you by that time, you don't play. I can't help it, not my rule. Talk to Milwaukee Recreation about it if you have a problem with the date, not me.

I also need to ask all of you if you've filled out your player cards. I forgot to check today at practice, if you have not yet filled out a card, let me know via inbox or my brewerfan email address jamie@brewerfan.net so I can fill it out for you before turning them all in. Failure to have a card turned in by the first game means you don't play per Milwaukee Rec rules. I know that I have to fill out a card for Houlie and Bball, so please contact me ASAP.

I would like to finish this post by letting non players know that they can obtain shirts if wanted in the store section of the site. Softball Shirt Link I think it is not a stretch to let you all know that this team looks quite impressive. I don't know what the rest of the league will look like, but I can't see how they would be much better than brewerfan.net will be. You can also be confident that considering this site is loaded with baseball junkies that we will surely have statistics available for all to view. Good stats or bad, they will be posted. You can also expect to see in the near future an opening day lineup which I'd like to get a vote on from the players.

Players: Do you think that we could set up a date and time to meet in the chat room to discuss positions and batting order? I think it's a good idea as mentioned before to mix up our lineup putting power and high average hitters all over the place so that defenses can't play us according to the batting order.

I was thinking Sunday may 7th at 7:30 pm would be a good time for a chatroom meeting. Brewers play at 3:10 cst, so we can have the chat room by meeting time.

Thanks for the time to read this, please remember to contact me about player cards.

Thanks

Jamie, I apologize for having missed the first three practices, despite getting together with a few fellow teammates last Sunday in a smaller setting. Next week Sunday should work well for me, and I hope to make all of the games through May at least. Plus, I paid my dues http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .

I respect you for not wanting to put certain people on the spot, but if they committed to play, and haven't done so, I would be interested to know who those people are. I'm sure I can figure it out with a little homework, but I don't see anything wrong with calling a few people out at this point.

Colbypatrick-

You told me you wouldn't be able to make practices. You mentioned you'd like to practice other days and then you did go practice other days. That's way cool. I'm not upset, I just need to crack the whip so I canturn in player cards and fees so everyone who wants to play can play.

BTW- Oddly enough, I can't make it Sunday because I have to work so I guess I'll have to wait to toss the ball around with you untill a game.

I know last week one or two people mentioned they didn't care for individual statistics, but no comments from anyone else so I'll go ahead and compile with updates after each game. I brought a spreadsheet along so the guys could see what I would be keeping track and again no comments so I guess everything was OK.

As for 'bad' stats like K's and E's, I was planning on putting it in the scorebook for accounting purposes only. I wasn't planning to post them on the stat page. We're not here to put anybody down.

I'll start working on a HTML page this week and post it for all to view and provide a chance for feedback before the first game.

I know this has been posted before, but has a schedule been released? If so, could this be pinned to the top or added to this thread for easy access? I keep forgetting the start time of the first game, and just found out I have a work-related party that night.

As far as stats go that was one of the major reasons I got on board so hopefully it is a go. I have two brothers that post here sometimes (afeter and casselsuglies) and any ribbing I get from the amount of k's and e's I can handle. Plus I would love to see the amount of errors I would have throughout the year.

Woo! I'm back in town and ready for some more practice. Sunday shouldn't be a problem for me, and the chat is fine too. I hope missing a week doesn't send me back to square one as far as soreness goes http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

You should post all stats so we can call for the head of the hitting coach/3rd base coach/pitchiing coach http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif after every game.

Put my K's and E's up. I don't care. But remember, sometimes those hard hit balls that bounce off gloves are called "hits". http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

I can't make the chat. I'm more of a slap hitter who has hit anywhere from 2nd-7th except 4th. I'll put up my career stats in a little bit.

Edit: Wow, I was just kidding about those errors. I count everything I lay a glove on as an error if it's not converted (except diving plays or slow choppers with really fast runners, etc).

Career Stats *The Packy's leagues are with an outseam ball that results in slower hit balls and less hits. The Fall League is at Czijon with our rules.

Also, I really realy want to play infield. I can handle outfield, but I'll run myself out of breath and will be very station to station on the bases. I may make this Sunday's practice, but I would have to leave after about an hour.

FYI, this would be my deinitions of an "E":

- an infielder drops a routine pop up.

- an outfielder lets the ball go through the legs allowing runners to advance.

- any overthrow allowing runners to advance.

This goes for both offense and defense. If you want a 'hit', you'll have to earn it.

We're amateurs here, so any hard smash to the IF will always be a hit in my book. And any drops or bad hops in the OF I'll call a hit.

I'll post all the stats then. Knowing each players K-rate my help us put together a more efficient batting order. If all else, I can always take the bad stats of the board and discuss those items internally.

Are you saying dropped balls by the outfielders won't be considered errors? I think they should be. Its the most routine play.

I wasn't going to. My reasoning is a fly ball is only routine (at our level of play) if it is hit right at someone. As we've seen in practice, most balls we need to run to catch up to, which to me isn't neccessarily an easy or routine play.

I was only planning to mark errors in the extreme cases. What does everyone else think?

i certainly don't think our fielding should be held up to major league standards or anything. jimbo's descriptions so far of what should constitute errors seem reasonable.

also, i can't make the practice or chat this sunday due to work.

i will be able to make our first game.

I will be able to make the chat and practice on Sunday.

I am hoping we can get a little more defensive practice with base runners zooming around. Having to hurry a throw to first or maneuvering around to get a clean throw is something I have not had to do for years.

So razzor, I take it you're volunteering to be the backup scorekeeper when I'm in the field? (hint, hint)

Jimbo-

I've got a scorebook for you. Remind me to give it to ya at the first game. It's the team's scorebook I bought when I purchased practice balls.

I guess lineups will be taken care of before each game.

What do you guys think about asking players to show 20 minutes before gametime? Anyone showing after that time gets added to the bottom of the order. (This enables me to have a lineup by gametime)

It's quite easy to learn. As a matter of fact, I'm almost positive the Brewers website has a tutorial on it.

Try keeping score in an IGT, people can suggest their favorite way to score and help you along if you have questions.

Pretty simple.

1= P

2= C

3= 1b

4= 2b

5= 3b

6= SS

7= RF

8= CF

9= RF

(or for softball, outfield goes like this: 7 LF, 8LC, 9 RC, 10 RF)

When you're me, nothing is routine.

Great line.
