McCutchen in agreement with Brewers

Saying he can play all 3 outfield spots was true, once upon a time.  I suppose he technically still *can* be put in CF, but definitely should not be, ever, unless nobody else on the roster capable of doing so is left in the game.

Yeah it would be the same as saying Yelich can play all 3 OF spots, badly.

Pair this with the Renfroe addition and you probably have a slight improvement vs RHP and a major improvement vs LHP compared to the Garcia/JBJ duo (mainly because JBJ is quite bad and Clutch MASHES lefties). Albeit you likely have a big drop in defense with this pair as well.

2019-21 vs. RHP:

# Name Team G AB PA H 1B 2B 3B HR R RBI BB IBB SO HBP SF SH GDP SB CS BB% K% AVG OBP SLG OPS wRC+

1 Avisail Garcia - - - 295 810 880 214 144 32 1 37 99 126 44 2 215 19 7 0 19 17 7 5.0% 24.4% .264 .315 .443 .758 102
2 Hunter Renfroe - - - 296 748 814 166 78 43 0 45 108 122 55 0 235 3 8 0 10 7 1 6.8% 28.9% .222 .275 .460 .735 91
3 Andrew McCutchen PHI 246 643 748 138 80 30 0 28 100 96 96 1 174 1 8 0 9 9 2 12.8% 23.3% .215 .314 .392 .706 88
4 Jackie Bradley Jr. - - - 308 784 877 165 93 41 5 26 106 86 71 3 241 17 3 2 9 13 7 8.1% 27.5% .210 .289 .375 .664 75

2019-21 vs. LHP:

# Name Team G AB PA H 1B 2B 3B HR R RBI BB IBB SO HBP SF SH GDP SB CS BB% K% AVG OBP SLG OPS wRC+

1 Andrew McCutchen PHI 151 275 329 80 44 15 2 19 55 47 50 1 61 4 0 0 6 3 0 15.2% 18.5% .291 .407 .567 .975 157
2 Hunter Renfroe - - - 193 335 391 83 41 14 1 27 63 60 49 1 86 2 5 0 5 1 1 12.5% 22.0% .248 .343 .537 .880 130
3 Avisail Garcia - - - 183 321 372 88 52 21 1 14 50 47 45 7 80 5 1 0 10 2 4 12.1% 21.5% .274 .371 .477 .848 125
4 Jackie Bradley Jr. - - - 190 288 335 63 42 12 1 8 34 27 36 1 94 7 3 1 7 7 2 10.7% 28.1% .219 .317 .351 .668 79

Go get a Voit-type to help against righties (.868 OPS and 134 wRC+ the past three years) and we should be sitting pretty good.

Sorry but this lineup is still way short if they want to win the World Series.

instead of signing a real impact bat like Castellanos we went dumpster diving much like we did at last years deadline. Great pitching is going to be wasted by having a sub par offense.

The Braves just won the World Series with Riley (898 OPS), Freeman (896 OPS), Albies (799 OPS), Duvall (772 OPS), Swanson (760 OPS), Soler (749 OPS), Rosario (740 OPS), Pederson (732 OPS) & d'Arnaud (671 OPS) as their nine man lineup. They were no juggernaut.

The nine Brewers who got the most PAs in the postseason were Adames (886 OPS), Avisail (820 OPS), Urias (789 OPS), Escobar (786 OPS), Wong (783 OPS), Omar (743 OPS), Yelich (736 OPS), Cain (729 OPS) & Rowdy (719 OPS). Not a huge difference.

If McCutchen (778 OPS) is a dumpster dive then the Braves won the WS in large part because of an even bigger dumpster dive in Rosario (740 OPS).

Small samples be crazy like that.

Awesome post. Holy heck did Rosario have a post-season run eh? That was fun to watch.

I think he'll play LF when Yelich DHs

This probably just cut into Tyrone's ABs for his season.

I'm sure between Yelich and Cain injuries, Taylor will get his, but if we sign another outfielder, that shows us what management thinks of Taylor's future as a Brewer.

Can we add another bat?  We already have 13 hitters now.  Three starting OF, 4 IF, 2 C, and then McCutchen, Brosseau, Peterson, Taylor..  I'm assuming we will have 13 pitchers most of the season.  Sure, I believe to start the season we will have expanded rosters but throughout the season we will be limited to 13.  Only Brosseau has an option left so its not like we can just option these guys out.  Jace is going to get a lot of ABs being the only LH bat on the bench.

Is there any chance this team signs a more prominent bat or is this pretty much what we are going with. In my opinion this is probably our biggest acquisition for the lineup which would be really disappointing but hopefully Stearns signs or trades for a MUCH better hitter to improve what looks to be a pretty bad offensive team.

If baseball is supposed to be fun then I’m for this signing.

For whatever it’s worth, ZiPS and especially THE BAT X still believe in McCutchen’s bat.

Taylor is already 28, and has a sub .330 OPB for his career in both the majors as well as the minors.

Its great when a 2nd round pick makes it after spending a decade in the minors, but biography aside Taylor is just a guy.

I suspect any addition we make going forward on the position player side will be via trade, I would be surprised if we bring in another free agent bat.

Also this lineup had a fair number of underperformers last year, the numbers just don't back up that this is a bad lineup

Our lineup after we added Adames and Rowdy was pretty good last year too and this year we get them for a full season. Plus we all know Stearns is aggressive mid-season for upgrades

Yup. From Willy’s first game on 5/22 through 9/4 when he hit the DL the Brewers scored the 2nd most runs in MLB.

I'm surprised by this move, as the defensive metrics pretty much indicate that McCutchen is a complete butcher with the glove.  Since Stearns seems to place real value in outfield defense, I can't help but think that McCutchen was signed to be the primary DH.
