40-man roster discussion (part three)

They have a couple of spots open once McCutchen is back plus Topa/Cousins could easily go on the 60 day if it ever got full. Stearns used to claim guys then remove shortly later but don't see much of that anymore. Didn't really have to remove Bettinger but I guess if confident nobody will claim better to have more flexibility. Probably should do the same with Ray.

the brewers have outrighted dylan file to the minor leagues. being his first outright assignment, he had no choice but to accept the assignment after clearing waivers.

the roster is at 37 players.

alex hall has been designated for assignment. the brewers have seven days to try to trade, release or outright him to the minor leagues. if he clears outright waivers, he cannot refuse the minor league assignment.

the roster is at 39 players, with one player on the special covid-19 injured list.

interesting to note that josh hader was reinstated from the restricted list today, not from the paternity leave list.

the paternity leave list is limited to three days, so when those three days were up, the brewers quietly transferred hader to the restricted list. during that time, he was removed from the 40-man roster.

under the previous collective bargaining agreement, mlb clubs would not have been obligated to grant pay and service time during a restricted list stint.

thus, on saturday and sunday, the roster had been at 38 players. the roster is now back to 39 players.

It looks like we’re still on 39 players and Pedro Severino’s activation will bring that up to 40 players today.

Somebody will have to be sent down to AAA. Or maybe today’s the day we trade Mr. Hiura.

I appreciate @djoctagone for running this thread and related posts.

The idea of having 3 catchers on the roster is completely contrary to the philosophy of having flexibility with position players.

Given that he won’t be eligible for the postseason, trading Severino to a team that isn’t concerned about this season’s playoffs seems inevitable .

pedro severino has been reinstated, returning him to the 40-man roster. if he remains on the 40-man through game 162 and the brewers reach the postseason, presumably severino will be placed on the restricted list again, which would open up a 40-man spot.

if postseason eligibility rules haven't changed with the new collective bargaining agreement, the brewers may be able to petition the commissioner's office to add any player who was in the organization at 11:59 pm on 31 august to their 40-man and be postseason eligible.

the 40-man roster is at capacity.

the brewers haven't had five catchers on their 40-man in-season since . . . last season. but prior to that, you had to go all the way back to 2009 for the last time the brewers were carrying five catchers in-season.

jake mcgee signing is official. he has one minor league option remaining, but enough service time to refuse any minor league assignment. it also appears that he has never been outrighted to the minor leagues before.

the 40-man roster is at capacity.
