josé ureña has his contract selected by the brewers. he is out of minor league options. he has never been outrighted to the minor leagues, but has enough service time to refuse any outright assignment.

the 40-man roster is at 39 players.

Guessing that spot #40 is ticketed for Luis Perdomo.

victor caratini has been acquired from the san diego padres for brett sullivan and a minor leaguer. caratini has one minor league option remaining, and has never been outrighted to the minor leagues.

alex jackson has been acquired from the miami marlins for two minor leaguers. jackson is in his final options year, and has never been outrighted to the minor leagues.

with these moves, the roster is at 39 players.

No offense to Pablo Reyes but isn't Mark Mathias really the utility man in waiting in Nashville?

I agree that at this point, Mathias should get the first ‘utility man’ call in 2022. I’m excited for a Nashville bat, almost any Nashville bat, to get a chance in the bigs this year.

josé ureña has been designated for assignment. the club has seven days to try to release, trade or place him on outright waivers. if he clears outright waivers, he can refuse the assignment and become a free agent.

the roster is at 38 players.

i am hard pressed to recall such a long in-season period where the brewers have had at least one open spot on their 40-man roster.

the season started on 7 april, and we've yet to see a full 40-man roster since.

j.c. mejía is placed on the restricted list and is removed from the 40-man roster.

trevor kelley has his contract selected. kelley appears to have two minor league options remaining, but has been outrighted to the minor leagues before.

the roster is at 38 players, with one player on the covid-19 injured list.

I'm starting to get the feeling that they are holding that spot for Ethan Small or Brice Turang, should they need to call either up at a moment's notice. But why put them on the 40-man until they are absolutely needed?

the brewers certainly took a gamble in choosing not to protect any players during the offseason from the rule 5 draft, and that draft ended up being canceled. wonder if the brewers, knowing what they knew about collective bargaining chances, figured on the higher probability of the rule 5 draft being a non-factor?

at any rate, the brewers haven't had a full 40-man roster since the conclusion of the 2021 season.

Just to put the oddness of the Brewers current 40-man roster situation in context...

24 MLB teams currently have full 40-man rosters

5 MLB teams have just one opening on their 40-man rosters (39 players total)

The Brewers have 37 players on their 40-man roster (it'll be at 38 when McCutchen returns)

Not just “at Night” anymore.

It makes me think big moves are coming. Stearns loves his May trades and/or he’s planning to aggressively promote from within.

Either way, a really interesting situation to follow.
