a $50mm bonus pool has been created to reward the top 100 pre-arbitration players. it will be based on baseball writers' association of america award voting results, and on a wins-above-replacement formula to be determined by july.

estimated annual cost for the brewers? $1.67mm.

the article linked above breaks down the bbwaa-determined bonus pool.

had this rule been in place last year, corbin burnes would've received a $2.5mm bonus for his cy young award.

I didn't realize until now that it was only going to the top 100 players. I do wish there was a bit more money in that pool but it is what it is.

One thing I'm not sure was clear. In the case of Corbin Burnes, would he received $2.5M and additionally a chunk based on his WAR? I was hopeful guys with Burnes and Vlad type seasons would be able to get at least 4-5 million bucks through this bonus pool but it looks like they won't quite get that much if they cap out at the $2.5M.

yeah . . . i'm unclear on that as well. the money left over for the top 100 players isn't that huge . . . especially if most of the top five mvp and cy young finishers in each league as decreed by the baseball writers' association are pre-arbitration players. remember, that money gets awarded first, and then whatever's left is split amongst 100 players.

for example, if every top five finisher in mvp and cy young voting was a pre-arbitration player, that would give almost a third of the $50mm pool just to those 10 players. that's not a lot left to distribute to 100 guys.

thus, i think that corbin burnes would have gotten both $2.5mm and a much smaller war share.
