still unknown: will unvaccinated players be forced to go on the covid-19 injured list if deemed close contact with personnel testing positive, and will the requisite be seven days and a negative test at the conclusion of those seven days? again, we know that jace peterson went on the covid-19 injured list last year because he was unvaccinated. even if he had tested negative each and every day during those seven days, he couldn't come off the restricted list.

i'm still unclear how mlb teams determine close contact for unvaccinated players, as they apparently have eliminated the contact-tracing devices that they were required to wear, but it's five days on the covid-19 injured list if you're not vaccinated and come into close contact with someone who tests positive.

canada's current laws won't allow athletes without covid-19 vaccination into the country. if a player misses games in canada because of vaccine issues, he will be docked pay and service time.

regarding players put on the restricted list because they are barred from entering canada, per mlb policy, pitchers who go four innings or more in their last start cannot be replaced until four days after that start, preventing teams from using that spot for an extra reliever.

modification to the "outbreak" rule (defined as "significant" in this article) . . . it also allows teams to place players on a restricted list if they cannot meet the vaccination requirements to travel into canada. if the number of players is significant (last year it was three or more), then replacement players can be added without having to return them via outright waivers or optional assignment waivers.

also presumably, this means that a 40-man player who had been on optional assignment that is promoted as a replacement during significant use of a covid-19 restricted list would not burn one of his five options turns when returned to the minor leagues.

important to note with angel zerpa and his transactions, who had been on optional assignment with the royals but was recalled as a replacement when his club traveled to canada this week: zerpa has been sent to the minor leagues four times this season. the first transaction was an optional assignment, but it was before 2 may, and we know that assignments before 2 may do not count against the limit of five options turns. the next two transactions were optional assignments, and those count against the five.

but his fourth transaction this season (happening yesterday) was being returned to the minor leagues--a notable distinction.

one would think that zerpa still has two optional assignments against his limit of five, even though he's been sent down four times thus far this season.
