Stearns, you couldnt match that?? My god this is so frustrating.

All the NL contenders are getting better than us… Dodgers, Mets, Padres, Phillies, etc

Speaking of Phillies, they’re close to adding Castellanos.

Cant wait to waste this pitching AGAIN.

Figured the cost to acquire Voit would be a 10th ranked prospect or so and that appears to be the case here. I was willing to do that but wasn't sure the Brewers were interested in two 1B-only guys on their roster.

Do you want the Brewers to acquire a high priced SS this offseason yet or are we ok there?

I never said that… We have plenty of pieces to be able to acquire J.D. Davis… Thats who I want now that Voit is gone.

I wonder if this means that one of Lauer or Houser or both are being considered in a trade(s)?

What this means is, to me, is the Ethan Small gains made post-finger injury last year are real. He legitimately lit up the Dominican League. I highly highly recommend visiting the Minor League Audio/Video thread and giving the Ethan Small interviews a listen. It is hard not to be really excited about Small's progress. He's a potential difference-maker.

As to Houser/Lauer availability...I would have to think if the right package presented itself: absolutely available.

Could be, but he's also 1 injury, assuming 6 man rotation otherwise 2 simultaneous injuries, from being in the rotation.

Remember what Yoda said:

End of year rotation:

#1- RHP Corbin Burnes

#2- RHP Brandon Woodruff

#3- LHP Aaron Ashby

#4- RHP Freddy Peralta

#5- LHP Ethan Small

If each pitches to their ability, no team in baseball can come close to the Brewers depth and talent. Not the Mets, not the Dodgers, no one. Add in the bullpen arms of Hader, Williams, and Cousins (possibly Boxberger although there’s more risk there) and, I’m about to show my extreme bias here, Luke Barker. If the team can put up 3-4 runs per game, the Brewers have a legitimate chance to win 100+ games.

Over the last three seasons-

Olson - .257/.354/.522/.876, 1465 PA, 89 HR, 244 RBI, 134 wRC+, 11.6 bWAR, 9.7 fWAR

Freeman - .304/.402/.544/.946, 1411 PA, 82 HR, 257 RBI, 144 wRC+, 11.7 bWAR, 11.7 fWAR

It's an interesting debate.  No doubt that Freeman is a better offensive player, almost solely on his ability to reach base on a much more consistent basis than Olson.

The longer the window of years, the more it will benefit the older player.

Last year, Olson .371 OBP, Freeman .393 OBP. But Olson was higher in SLG and OPS. Freeman 133 OPS+, Olson 153 OPS+. That's a pretty big difference. Olson's home field was much more pitcher-friendly.

I think there is zero evidence to predict Freeman will be better offensively, going forward.

This CBA is clearly no better for small market teams than the last one. As usual all the top talent other than Bryant is going to the big market teams so we are left with the scraps instead of signing Castellanos who is a perfect fit for this team.

15 of the top 17 free agents to this point (by total dollars) have signed with teams that didn’t make the playoffs last year.

The other two are Freeman & Taylor with the Dodgers.

The largest FA contract handed out so far by a 2021 non-Dodgers playoff team is Steven Matz to STL @ 4/44.

Luckily for all the big market, high payroll teams with mediocre results (looking at you Mets & Phillies & Angels) 12 teams get in the playoffs now.

Small market teams are smart and know that the vast majority of these contracts will be disasters in a couple years. Same as every big contract the Brewers have given out. The only way the CBA could change that would be if contracts were not 100% guaranteed and players could be cut for little or no cost.

The offense concerns me without a big addition but this division is so putrid, it might not matter. As long as our pitching holds up, we could have the worst offense in the National League and still win the division by 10 games.

...and then lose in the first round of the playoffs again because of the offense.

Winning the division is no longer good enough, it's time to take the next step, and wasting this pitching staff for a division championship just doesn't cut it.

The Giants won the most games & scored the 6th most runs in MLB. They lost in the 1st round.

The Rays won the most games in the AL & scored the 2nd most runs in MLB. They lost in the 1st round.

The White Sox won the 3rd most games in the AL & scored the 7th most runs in MLB. They lost in the 1st round.

Scoring a lot of runs (or even winning the most games in the regular season) doesn’t guarantee anything because the postseason is overwhelmingly random.

The team that won the WS only scored 52 more runs than the Brewers & they were missing a player who scored or drove in 100 of those runs before getting injured.
