Thanks to Mass Haas' post of Adam McCalvy's article, we can see the MILB Spring Training plan quite clearly:

- Wednesday, February 23 - "Build-Up Camp" commences for more than 50 mostly young players (e.g. Frelick, Small, H. Perez, Quero, T. Black, Gray, Kelly, Zamora, Warren, R. Smith, Henderson, Jordan, Vire, Moore, Clarke, Murray, Raabe, Nicasia, Peters, Avina, etc.)

- Saturday, March 5 - MILB pitchers and catchers report for physicals

- Sunday, March 6 - First formal work-out for MILB pitchers and catchers

- Friday, March 11 - MILB Position players report for physicals

- Saturday, March 12 - First full-squad MILB work-outs

- Saturday, March 19 - First MILB Spring Training games

- Tuesday, April 5 - Opening Day for AAA Nashville

- Friday, April 8 - Opening Day for AA Biloxi, High-A Wisconsin, Low-A Carolina

A quick scan tells me the only missing names are Clayton Andrews and Ray Black, presumably both injured. The most surprising name to me is 18-year old OF Luis Castillo.

It's nice to see our top 2021 + 2022 international signings (J. Chourio, G. Barrios, D. Guilarte, J. Barrios, J. Severino, L. Lara) invited to camp. There's also 2 other youngins invited that have yet to make their MILB debut (J. Guzman - 2021 class, P. Quintana - from the Billy McKinney trade).

Ray Black remains on the restricted list. While the Brewers retain his rights, he has been on the list since August 31st. You can see his transaction log at the bottom of the link here

So something is up, the restricted list is often the home for players who in whatever fashion have gone AWOL. Not saying definitively that’s the case here.

Quick ?: Are the scores of these match-ups (or Box scores, even?) only available via say the respective team's Twitters? I checked the MILB website yesterday and noticed they were still posting Oct. 2021 games as their latest scores. Thanks in advance.

The Brewers Player Development twitter account, the same one that posts the lineups, will sometimes post scores and a couple of top performers, but that is about all you get from these games.

Thanks for posting, damuelle.

That Carolina lineup has me thinking about quitting life & moving to Zebulon for the summer.

Then I'll go to Biloxi.  Especially with this second lineup - Frelick, Mitchell, Wiemer, Gray, Zamora, Warren, Kahle... that is a lot of draft capitol plus our only two top 100 rankers...

I’ll probably end up wrong on several of these, but I could see the lineup talent being a little more evenly distributed between Biloxi, Wisconsin and Carolina on opening day, something like

AA

Valerio, 2B

Zamora, SS

Mitchell, CF

Wiemer, RF

Howell, LF

Dillard, 1B

Lutz, DH

Holt/Cantrelle, 3B

Reetz, C

A+

Frelick, CF

Black, 2B

Gray, RF

Warren, 3B

Martinez, 1B

McGee/Campbell DH

Miller, C

Rodriguez, LF

Murray, SS

A

Mendez, LF

Quero, C

Perez, CF

Clarke, DH

Garcia, SS

Chirinos, 1B

Bello/ Peters, LF

Raabe/Vargas, 2B

Ferrer, 3B

Lots of potential at all three, although I would still probably place Biloxi at the top.

I agree that the lineups are much more even this year, which is great to see after Biloxi had to suffer through a trying 2021 season. It's the projected starting pitching in Biloxi (e.g. Castaneda, Bullock, Luna, Bennett are some of my guesses) which I think will give them a nice edge.

As far as player placement, which is fun yet somehow obsessive, I'll share my key differences from your solid lists:

  • J. Lopez splitting primary AA catching duties with J. Reetz
  • F. Valerio in High-A, allowing K. Howell to split his AA time between OF/IF and freeing up some AA ABs for Devanney, Lujano and LG Castillo
  • E. Murray in Low-A, allowing A. Pinero to be primary High-A SS with Y. Coca also getting time at High-A 2B/3B/SS
  • T. Black also in Low-A, allowing F. Valerio to be primary High-A 2B
  • J. Vargas to start the year in the ACL again, allowing D. Castillo to get some Low-A ABs

I agree with you on Vargas, but that was more of a, if they like him enough to put him in full season ball, then he is starting, so he is either the primary second baseman in Carolina or starting out in Arizona. I had Valerio 60/40 on AA/A+ but Black at 90/10 on A+/A. Given the scouting reports and where they drafted him, he seems like the type that wouldn't see Carolina this year unless something goes wrong (I'm also of the "slot in your top 20-25 guys where you think they should go and then fill everything else in around them" mindset).

As for Murray, I would have put him in low-A, but there looked to be more playing time in A+ (slotted in Turang, Zamora and Garcia at shortstop and then filled in from there). I could be wrong, but I think both Coca and Pinero are minor league free agents at year's end, so if they want to give them an extended look as more than organizational middle infielders, it would probably involve Zamora staying in A+ so they could sink or swim at AA.

We’re 6 games into the Brewers’ MILB Spring Training, so I think it’s fair to sound the Potentially-Missing-in-Action alarm on the following players, who’ve not shown up in any of the line-up cards or social media videos, to my knowledge. If any contributors have insight into the status of these players, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you:

  • C Jason Lopez
  • P Arnaldo Hernandez
  • OF Je’Von Ward – injured August 2021
  • OF Pablo Abreu – missed all of 2021
  • P Jhoan Cruz
  • P Arman Sabouri – injured July 2021
  • P Brendan Murphy
  • P Bryce Milligan – missed all of 2021
  • P Alexis Ramirez – missed all of 2021
  • P Caden Lemons – injured May 2021
  • P Juan Geraldo – injured August 2021
  • P Brandon Ramey – made 5 rehab appearances late 2021
  • P Jackson Gillis – injured June 2021
  • P Josh Shapiro – missed all of 2021
