Packers 2022 NFL Draft Discussion

reillymcshane

A few thoughts...

1) Pickens must have been off of the Packers board after the crap he pulled this weekend.

B) The Packers must be confident that two of Rhyan, Newman, and Van Lanen can play RT, or confident that one of those three can play RT and Jenkins will be back sooner rather than later.

3) LOL at whichever writer said yesterday that Walker wasn't even the best LB on his team.

4) LOL at Tony Pauline who had Logan Bruss as a 7th/UDFA.  NFL.com had him with a 3rd/early 4th round grade.

5) I'll reiterate that I think that the Packers like their five TEs a lot more than most message board fans.

I still have to think the Packers trade up to the Top of the 4th? There's quite a bit of talent there (which seems to be the case in most drafts). But, then again, maybe the Packers are fine seeing how the board falls. I'm unsure. But lotta tasty swings to be taken there.

6) The way that WRs are going off the board, if the Packers want a 2nd WR who can be a contributor in 2022 I wouldn't be surprised if they have to grab Samori Toure in the 4th.

7) I'm not convinced that the first round 5th year option is a good thing, particularly for QB and WR because that 5th year is going to get very expensive.  A 4-year deal will put more pressure on the player to sign an extension earlier or face the unknown of free agency.

If RAS is the thing, Zyon McCollum and Tariq Woolen are still available.  The Packers need CB depth.

Yeah, I'm looking at Toure; Shakir; Ezukanma maybe take a stab at the absurdly athletic Kevin Austin. But, then again, they may not think they need another WR? I guess it all depends on how they view their WR room internally.

Yeah, Tonyan is maybe the biggest pass catching threat on the roster right now. If he’s healthy he could lead the team in receiving, but that’s a big if.

Obviously they like Deguara but he’s been hurt both years so hard to count on getting much, but there’s clearly some upside there too.

That’s the extent of my TE knowledge. Is Marcedes back? What’s the deal with the practice squad TEs?

Some ideas for round #4:

WR - Khalil Shakir, Bo Melton, Calvin Austin
TE - Isaiah Likely, Daniel Bellinger, TE Charlie Kolar
OG - Darian Kinnard, Jamaree Salyer
OT - Daniel Faalele, Rasheed Walker
DE - Kingsley Enagbare
DT - Perrion Winfrey
CB - Zyon McCallum, Tariq Woolen

Lots of options. I'm sure there are a ton of other ideas as well.

Completely agree with you here. And these guys are unbelievably athletic. Maybe grab one and try to develop into a dime back or just that "He can run with anyone" guy. I am not entirely comfortable with overly relying on the development of Shemar.

I think they both go pretty quick tomorrow. But you never know.

Don't forget Cade Otten or a Chigoziem Okonkwo. Both seem to have TE traits the Packers like.

Also, what exactly did Pickens do this past Sunday? I know he was already under the microscope with maturity and massive behavioral issues that often came out on the field. But, I've seen a couple comments here. What happened?

Dominique Robinson is still available, and the Packers haven't drafted an Edge rusher yet.  The Packers had scouts at Miami(OH)'s pro day.

Regarding TEs, Marcedes is back, and the Packers gave Tyler Davis a lot of snaps last year (13%, and they didn't sign him until Sept. 28th).  I think they're very high on him, and to promote Dafney from the PS as fast as they did and keep him on the roster (and sometimes play him over Deguara) I think they really like him too.  Dafney has been a good special teams player for them, and played 25% of the offensive snaps in the 10 games he played last year.  Tonyan, Mercedes, Deguara, Davis, and Dafney cover the spectrum,   While only Deguara is technically under contract in 2023, Davis and Dafney are RFAs.

Yeah, they probably need to add at least one guy to the mix. I had Kingsley Enagbare. Partially because that's an awesome name. Might add someone as a FA as well - just a depth guy.

Dominique Robinson is a super interesting prospect imho. He only made the shift to Defense, if I recall in 2019 or 2020 (?). But a pretty darn good athlete and he also logged over 200 ST snaps in his career. Seems like a definite Packers guy. I remember when I was looking through Edges reading his coaches raved about his willingness, positive attitude, and just being a great teammate. Seems like a very Packers guy.

I Kinda like that Weston kid from Northern Iowa. RAS was elite. Great size.

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

It would be something to take the two best WR's from FCS but, then again, Samari Toure demonstrated this past season: It doesn't matter where you are good. If you're a good WR, it translates. All 3 are well thought-of Day 3 prospects.

Some interesting quotes from Gutes on yesterday's picks:

On Watson: "We got a chance to bring him in on one of our 30 visits and got to spend a lot of time with him. Really felt that he was a smart kid that we feel will fit our culture.”

On Rhyan: Gutekunst said that Rhyan has the size and strength to play inside, but that the team “certainly thinks he can play tackle.”

On Elgton Jenkins: “Elgton will play wherever he wants. He’s that good.”

If that's true, then Jenkins will want to play tackle because they get paid a lot more than guards.
