Is my understanding of the Packers draft picks correct?

 

Picks they own: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7

(traded their own 6 for Cobb)

 

Likely comp picks: 4, 7

(for losing Linsley and Williams)

 

Picks added: 7

(for trading Ka’dar Hollman to Houston)

 

Total (likely) draft picks: 1, 2, 3, 4, 4, 5, 7, 7, 7

 

* Plus, they traded a 2023 6th rounder to the Rams for Corey Bojorquez and a 2023 7th rounder

Cornerback Faion Hicks, who draws a variety of opinions in the scouting community, looked terrific from start to finish. His 40-yard dash time was a swift 4.37 seconds with a 10-yard split of 1.48. That number would have been fifth-best at the NFL Combine behind two record-breaking performances at the position.

 

His other numbers included 3.94 seconds in the short shuttle, 6.78 seconds in the three-cone, and 37.5 inches in the vertical jump. Hicks also completed 13 reps on the bench press of 225 pounds.

 

Making matters even better, Hicks was terrific in position drills as he looked fluid and smooth. The feeling from scouts was the need to go back and rewatch the film on Hicks to see what they may have missed the first time around.

 

Other Badgers take advantage of Wisconsin Pro Day

As I tweeted out earlier, the Badgers’ other defensive back — safety Scott Nelson — performed well beyond expectations. His 40 time came in at 4.38 seconds, while his short shuttle clocked just 3.92 seconds and his three-cone at a blistering 6.62 seconds. His vertical jump was 39.5 inches with a broad jump of 10’6″.

 

Ironically, it was Nelson’s athleticism that was questioned as he’s a hard-nosed defensive back with great instincts. Nelson will not go unnoticed and is a potential late-round pick.

I'd have less than zero interest in Nelson. Zero instincts and play making.

Holy biscuits, that's bonkers. Can you say: "Rising up Draft Boards after the combine."?

I've seen the Packers linked to Boye Mafe, and edge defender from Minnesota. He had a really good Senior Bowl and looked great at the combine (ran a 4.53 40 yard dash). He's a fast, explosive pass rusher - with high potential. He's still got a lot to learn - and has been just average in other areas of the game. 

Originally he was seen as more of a 2nd round guy - but his combine really helped push him up - possibly into the 1st round - due to his promise of being a premium pass rusher.

Yes indeed. They have been linked and, honestly, it excites me quite a bit. I personally think he's a diamond in the rough. Sky is the Limit. Pauline just bumped him into his Top 30 post-combine.

Mafe would be great if he's still be on the board, his combine performance has drawn a lot of attention though.  Another edge I like is Karlaftis who might drop down the board a bit because of injury.  I would love to see them be able to address this position in the first couple rounds

Karlaftis is one of those guys who might drop to us. Probably not - but you never know. A few guys always drop. Just never know which ones. I've seen him mocked to the Packers a bit.

As someone who admittedly doesn’t know anything about this draft class, should we pick two guys in the late first now that we have the Raiders pick too, or is there an ever elusive “needle mover” we could package the picks together to move up & grab?

I’m a fan of taking two bites at the apple. Good draft to have picks, especially on a team that may implode financially in a year or two and need cheap young talent.

Use those extra picks on players, not on positioning to move up.  Doing so also frees up a bit more cap space this year to go get veteran receiver talent on shorter term deals without further screwing their cap situation up 2-3 years out.

I think the concensus is that the needle movers are at the top 10-ish picks and then many similarly-skill level players for quite a few picks (like middle-ish 2nd rnd).  Thus, I'd say we stick with multiple bites.  Seems like a few WRs (Burks/Olave) and OLB (Mafe/Karlaftis) could be available in our 1st round pick ranges.

That's what I'm hoping for. WR at 22 and then DL or LB at 28. Then 2nd round, go with an OL and maybe a TE or another WR. But I'm not an NFL GM. So, it will most definitely be fun to see what comes.

There doesn't seem to be. In theory, using the value charts you could package 22 and 28 and move up to 8. From my initial draft review, there seems to be a bunch of WR's that are 1st round talents but do not stand out against any other one.

I think the best strategy is to lay back and see what players fall to the Packers. That said, the team might have specific players on their radar - which may require a trade to move up and get. Whatever works. 

What I love is that with the picks we have the team can add a lot of cheap talent. That's big for going forward. 

If Douglas comes back, we probably don't need a DB. Add in QB and RB as well as those positions are set.

I think in the first round we can be looking at WR, OL, DL or LB. Of these, WR is probably the most pressing need - and there are a lot of promising guys that should be available at #22 - and perhaps at #28. Heck, the team could feasibly grab two WRs in the first round if they like the value. I wonder if that's ever happened.

Otherwise, in the second round, the club could look at a TE. I doubt they do so in round one.

As I said before - it will be fun.

Just based on need, and typical Packer drafting, I'd love:

1st Round: WR and DL (Olave is really growing on me. - Love the route running prowress) 

2nd Round: Safety and OLB

3rd Round: TE (Fergusen could fit in here)

4th Round: OL and MLB (why not Leo Chanel?) 

5th-7th: RB, WR/PR, even a K or P wouldn't be terribly out of the question. 

Of course a 2x or 3x WR draft wouldn't surprise me either.

If Chenal is around in the 4th, that would be a steal. But I think someone will bite earlier - especially after his combine performance. Even getting him in the 3rd would be nice. 

I've seen the Packers linked to safeties in some mocks - mostly Daxton Hill from Michigan - at #28. Perhaps with Douglas' signing the need for a DB will diminish.
