2022 Pitching Staff

FanGraphs has a really good Brent Suter breakdown today & there wasn't really a place to put it, so figured I'd start a thread for the 2022 pitching staff.

I think the two biggest questions regarding the staff once MLB resumes functionality is whether Stearns & company will deal from the pitching depth to bolster the offense, and will they stick with the six man rotation if their research suggests it's beneficial from a longterm performance/health standpoint.

My best guess would be they retain all of the top seven starting options with Corbin, Woody, Freddy, Houser & Lauer joined in the rotation by a low dollar veteran FA on a one year deal.

Ashby opens in the MLB pen stretched out for multi inning work with Small starting in AAA & the first SP up when needed.

Would also expect them to maybe sign one or two veteran FA relief options to cover the innings we got from Boxberger & Strickland last year.

Will Sammon of the Athletic reports that the Brewers will utilize J.C. Mejía as a reliever this upcoming season.

Mejía was acquired from the Guardians in a trade earlier this offseason and has been phenomenal in the Dominican Winter League, recording a microscopic 1.50 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 23/9 K/BB ratio across 18 innings (15 appearances). The 25-year-old righty struggled mightily as a starter in Cleveland last year, but could experience a breakthrough out of Milwaukee's bullpen.

Ditto. It seems as tho he took his late season relief success in Cleveland and ran with it into the DWL. Very very encouraging stuff. It would appear they may have unearthed another Cousins-like impact arm.

I think that with 100+ innings under their belt for all our starters in 2021, the immediate workload concerns after 2020 will mostly be gone, and I would expect to see a 5-man rotation for the most part. What I think they'll do though is to not skip the 5th starter after off days, and use a spot starter when there are long stretches with no off days, so that it will be a 5-man rotation but a high proportion of starts will be on 5 days rest. I expect we might also see them using the spot starter to perhaps skip (Or push forward) a turn in the rotation for someone when needed.

So without any injuries (Never going to happen of course, but still) you'd expect starters 1-5 with 30 starts, and #6 with 12.

I sure hope he can provide a boost, as we have big holes to fill with Boxberger and Strickland. I wouldn't mind signing one of those guys back for the right price.

As a whole, you'd probably have to say both Box and Strickland had seasons out of the Pen that exceeded expectations. For the most part, Boxberger was a glue guy who held the Pen together during various stretches - extremely reliable for long stretches in various high-leverage roles. Strickland was a guy I expected nothing from, honestly, and he turned into an adequate inning eater in Middle relief. If anything, he raised the Floor for the low-end of the relief staff. It will be very interesting, as usual, to see how the Brewers fill out the Pen.

While it's true that Boxberger and Strickland exceeded expectations, both have had success prior to last year so it wasn't that big of a surprise. The big question is whether Cousins can come close to repeating the numbers he put up as a 26 year old rookie last year. Whether it's one of those guys or another veteran, I think adding a veteran reliever with a track record is a must.
