rumor that Caleb Williams is leaning towards transferring to Wisconsin

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Well I'll take it, but I just can't see why he'd want to come here. What a turn of events for the Mertz hype train if that were the case. Essentially Williams would be taking the spot of the top two QBs in that recruiting class (Mertz/Rattler).

This is probably where the rumors are coming from-

Check out the high schools and then look at who the next Wisconsin offensive coordinator will be. Still not nearly enough connected dots to make me think Williams would be coming to Wisconsin.

Whatever. Smart money is still on USC...unless someone outbids them...and if that happens it won't be Wisconsin.

If he was going to USC, why wouldn't he have committed already?

His family has literally said, "NFL not NIL" so why would "bidding" have anything to do with it?

Also, there's a rumor floating around that he's a big Russell Wilson fan and that Wilson called and spoke with him about Wisconsin.

Wow, good find. Finally something that makes sense as to why this could happen.

Big Ten may eliminate the divisions and go with a #1 vs #2 for conference championship.

This would basically mean Ohio State will get a near guaranteed championship game. This is going to hurt the Badgers chances of making the playoffs even with expansion.

Interesting. First, I don't see how that will help at all in beating the SEC once you're in the playoff, other than it increases OSU's chances from making the B1G title game to like 97% instead of 85%. Once you're there you're still at a massive uphill battle to the SEC. Second, it's so tough to do that when it's not a round robin schedule. You'll also very likely have some complicated tiebreak scenarios among 1 and 2 loss teams, but I suppose that can happen on determining division winners now. But I'd guess chances go up much with more teams involved including ones who didn't play each other(unlike in divisions).

Another thing to note if such a change happened would be if they skew the schedule to try and push more big matchup within the conference, like how its currently set up to create the top teams from each side playing more often. For the purposes of what they're doing (and TV and to get lower teams bowl eligible) I would think they would keep that going. But in general it's not really fair so it's another complication of how to cycle the schedule. Plus, the issue of there will be guaranteed rivalry games set in too, further complicating it.

One thing I like on it though is eliminating a conf game to get more involved with legit non conf opponents from the other major conferences, and to do them at home fields. In general, UW has been proactive on this already but it's good overall for the sport for everyone to do it.

Oddly, in spite of the current geographical division setup making much more sense overall (and the old one being made fun of) the old attempted balancing of divisions might actually have been the better way in terms of the issues they're trying to deal with here.

Any plan where Wisconsin does not play Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois every year is a plan that completely sucks. It just may suck so bad that I might have to do with Badger football as I have done with Packer football...and that's not watch any of it.

Badger have hired Bobby Engram as OC

Caleb Williams visiting Madison today apparently. Big push to get a commit this weekend.

He is down to USC and Wisconsin per this:

How I think the conversation between PC and Williams went.

Williams: Who will I throw to?

PC: Don't worry about that we only run very basic routes and they won't be open anyways.

Williams: What?

PC: We run ball

Williams: Thanks for inviting me

Besides the obvious Riley and SoCal aspects clearly in their favor, to me the real killer to this and why I never really got too into it was was we have no WRs besides Dike. Ferguson is gone too. Could've seen a discussion or logic over the last 3ish years when we actually had some decent and athletic WRs on the roster but had no idea how to use them. Or if there was some transfer WR he's bringing with I could've seen it. Who knows, open to be being surprised.

It honestly made no sense in pretty much every aspect there is. I can honestly not think of one good reason Wisconsin would be a better pick over USC or dozens of other schools.

Met a DII WR at a bar some years back and even his school was finding ways to pay him. He said it largely came through the school putting money on his dining card. Sure we're no Alabama or Ohio State, but we're not some rinky-dink school, either. And maybe being the biggest star at a still-big school pays better than being the #4 star at an even-bigger school.
