New year, new thread.

Joe Rudolph moving on to Va Tech. He's been with Chryst since 2008.

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Probably a good thing for the offense overall, but a big negative is that he was supposedly a big plus on the recruiting side.

He went from OC/Asst HC/OL at Wisconsin to JUST o-line at VaTech, so you'd have to assume this was a 'move elsewhere or be fired' situation....

Probably. I'm gonna laugh if he gets a raise.

Didn't he lose the OC job after last season?

Play calling, not OC. Though I don't believe the former actually happened either, FTR.

I had to look it up to see, his official title is:

Associate Head Coach / Run Game Coordinator / OL

Journal Sentinel has an article on it that sounds like UW was planning on keeping him as the OL coach. He said the biggest factor is both sides of his family have ties to the area. "I can’t lie," he said. "Location was big, being (closer) to our families in North Carolina, Pittsburgh and West Virginia was a pretty unique scenario."

It did note that he took a 6% pay reduction last year down to 675,000. Also stated that Christ will discuss the opening with Bostad before looking elsewhere.

Let's take a look at the efficiency of Chryst's passing offense in the team's last full season of games, pre-Mertz.

In 2019 the team ranked 2nd in the Big 10 with a pass efficiency rating of 151.2.

#1 in completion percentage at 70.1%.

#3 in average yards per attempt at 8.0.

#2 in TD/INT ratio at 3.6.

Maybe Mertz is really that bad.

Maybe Cephus and Coan (and a healthy Davis and Pryor) are that good.

Remember what Yoda said:

That’s basically saying they will lose to Ohio State and win every other game.

Yah, I don’t see that unless Mertz has a major breakout year.

Wisconsin adds UCLA WR transfer Keontez Lewis. He is a former three star recruit with nice size (6' 3", 195).

Hopefully he can run routes correctly otherwise we are doomed to see the same 5-yards and out patterns from the WR's again.

The pessimist in me says this guy will be lucky to even start a game as WR2.

They will win 8 or 9 games while losing a couple that they shouldn't.

It's Chysts MO. Good coach but far from a great one

With an iffy QB, yah. Mertz is just not good enough of a game manager and much too mistake prone to edge out the wins with PC’s methodical style.

As much as people hate guys like Horni and Coan, they were the kind of QB’s that maximize success with PC/Badgers football.

And Jay Shaw, a 2nd Team All Pac-12 CB by AP and PFF. 5'11", 190, 6 INTs and 147 INT return yards including taking one to the house over the last three seasons along with two forced fumbles.

As expect, glad they did it. They've opened up an OC spot on the website. But I'm curious what actually happens. If they hire a separate OC they'll be taking a coach from the D. So it's basically a choice of just call PC the OC and hire another LB coach. Or hire an OC and leave the D a coach short. Unless, I'm unaware of a rule change allowing one more coach or something.

I think Bostad was specifically ILB coach, so presumably the other LB coach could just absorb those duties.

Yea and I believe that's how it was done until a couple years ago until they added another D coach. I might be confusing a bit with DBs though. Could easily be the route they go with it. Jimmy has to roll his eyes a bit at all the resources and money put into the O side of the ball while they keep being mediocre, meanwhile he keeps dominating on D with less. But, that's the nature of football these days.

Good catch by the other poster with Orr. That makes a ton of sense.
