Tyler Gillies will report to minor league camp. Cleared from Hodgkin lymphoma.

Just a bit of the article

Gillies’ parents braced for the possibility the Brewers would release him. Cruel as it would’ve been, they said they would have understood the move; baseball is a business and some businesses don’t run on feelings. The release they feared still hasn’t come. Instead, boxes of gear, including the Brewers uniform top with the new logo in 2020 that he never got to wear in a clubhouse kept showing up at his doorstep, and personal notes arriving on his phone.

A day or two after Gillies informed the organization of his initial diagnosis, Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns called Gillies, encouraged him to focus on getting healthy and offered help.

“I was just like, ‘Wow, this is a man and an organization that cares,’” Gillies’ mother, Sharon, said. “It was the holidays, the middle of the offseason. That really helped Tyler’s mindset. It would’ve been easy to say, ‘Who is Tyler in the grand scheme of things?’”

Gillies is not a top prospect. He’s not on any “just missed” lists, either. But he’s the kind of pitcher the Brewers over the last couple of years have succeeded in developing: a late-bloomer from an independent league with good velocity, and with a tweak here or there, look out.

Brewers: Brice Turang, SS (No. 3)

There were times in recent years when Milwaukee officials wondered whether the 2018 first-rounder could stick at short or if a permanent move to second base was in the offing. These days, those same officials are calling him the best defender in the system, ahead of speedy outfielders like Sal Frelick and Garrett Mitchell. His range has improved on the left side, while his hands and actions remain at least above average. To be clear, a move to second could still be possible if Turang bumps up against Willy Adames as early as this summer. But right now, he could likely slip right into the Brewers lineup at short, and the group wouldn’t skip a beat defensively.

Brewers minor leaguer Tyler Gillies worried that cancer would take his life. Now he’s reporting to camp

Hopefully you all have an Athletic subscription (because Will Sammon does an awesome job), and he knocks Tyler's story out of the park at the link above.

AUDIO: Via the Walkin' Off Podcast: RHP Tyler Gillies

Tyler Gillies is a pitching prospect for the Milwaukee Brewers. After college, he played indy ball in Canada and never gave up on his MLB dream. Eventually, the Brewers offered Gillies a contract to become an affiliated professional baseball player.
