Luke Barker

Someone help me understand why Luke Barker is not a candidate for the Brewers bullpen? I was dumbfounded why he never got a call up last year. His MiLB stats are superb … I understand that doesn’t always lead to MLB success, but why not give him a try? Surely, he could out-perform the likes of Lindblom. Thoughts?

If you can find a person on this site that is not wondering the same thing I would be surprised.

I have to assume it's because he doesn't have any sort of standout trait that leads the team to believe he'll have success at the MLB level. He doesn't throw particularly hard, which is obviously the predominant trait the Brewers like in their relievers.

Lindblom is a starter, with the starter's repertoire. That is kind of an apples and oranges comparison.

Strikeout & walk numbers were about as good as it gets, but that 1.3 HR9 was pretty brutal. If AAA hitters were going yard that often, Brewers decision makers might have thought MLB hitters would feast.

Believe he's Rule 5 eligible if that ever ends up happening, so if another organization thinks he's worth a 40 man roster spot all season we'll find out then.

If not, he'll probably come to ST battling for one of those last couple two tree bullpen spots & be a candidate for the BNA/MKE shuttle in 2022.

I intentionally used Lindblom as an example because - while primarily a starter - he also pitched in relief for both Milwaukee & Nashville

Lindblom was under contract……which will usually give players multiple chances before teams give up on them.

So after the Brewers finally gave up on Lindblom …..DFA and then he accepted demotion to Nashville…..he did not get recalled even though he had success in AAA.

It’s clear that success at the major league level is about more then just promoting guys who do well in AAA.

Right or wrong they don’t believe in his stuff ……or at least haven’t up until now.
