.292/.424/.476 (.900 OPS/147 wRC+) in AAA this year, with more walks than strikeouts (18% BB, 16% K). Had some brief success in the majors too in 2018. Seems like a really good player to take a flyer on with a MiLB deal.

Rowdy Tellez and Tyler White combined to play 128 games for the Buffalo Bison last season, including 97 total as the team’s first basemen. There’s at least a remote chance those Bison fans got a sneak preview of the 2022 Milwaukee Brewers first base platoon.

I don't complain too much about moves but if this turns out to be the 1B platoon that would be really disappointing.

Not knowing the payroll restraints, I have no expectation that they'll be able to make a major acquisition. So while another year of hodgepodge first basemen wouldn't be exciting, it wouldn't be surprising. They've done pretty well scrap heaping together the position the past few years with guys like Tellez, Vogelbach, Gyorko, Aguilar, and Thames. Since 2017, those guys have contributed to the Brewers having the 13th best WAR in MLB at first base, and contributed to a team that has made the playoffs 4 of 5 years and totaled the 7th most wins in MLB.

 

So I'm not sure history shows that Stearns values making a splash at first base and he's been able to get by without doing so. That said, it is definitely a position that they could add a real impact bat if they have the resources to do so and I would LOVE for them to figure out a way to get Matt Olson on this team.

A reminder that the only additions that can be made right now are minor league ones so please refrain from sweeping conclusions that the Brewers are done making significant additions. Goodness, it's bad enough when people think the roster is set in December of a normal offseason. With it being literally impossible to add major leaguers currently, the hand wringing is bound to tip new scales around here soon.

100%. Stearns has typically every offseason wait for the top guys to get plucked away and then picked up guys like Wong that were bargains and filled a need. This year he may have to wait longer, but i'm sure he has a plan.

I feel like there's a pretty good chance Tyler White currently has the inside track on a roster spot as DH/1B, assuming Hiura needs more time in the minors.

I actually wouldn't mind White as a part time 1B/DH to start the season because I only really care about who is playing there after the trade deadline this year

Look at what the Cubs got out of Patrick Wisdom and Frank Schwindel last year. White has better career AAA OPS (.929) than either of those two.

I like the signing. For one thing, the walk rate and no strikeouts addresses a big weakness of the 2021 offense. He gets on base, makes contact, and that could be a good thing.

He's probably just a AAAA at this point but he was a guy who seemed to always be buried behind some players in the depth chart early on in Houston and then had a cold stretch on a good team after he had shown some promise.

 

Not too unlike Tellez actually. There are worse hitters getting MLB AB's so hopefully he's got something to offer off the bench or at least some insurance at AAA.

What do we think the chance of him making it are? Personally I like Rowdy! I think Huira could be good if he finds it! I also think there is opportunities on the open market.

I think White is a depth/wildcard piece at this point. But if the DH is implemented and he has a big Spring, he could get some serious consideration. That said, I think you're correct that they will ideally be looking outside the organization for an upgrade at 1st, moving Rowdy into a backup/DH role, first before banking on White or a Huira comeback to start the season.
