Brewers trade for Hunter Renfroe in exchange for Jackie Bradley Jr., David Hamilton and Alex Binelas

No offense, but what is wrong with some posters on this forum. People are complaining about a MIRACLE TRADE?? :laughing Renfroe is projected to out-hit Avisail Garcia next year and we just landed him for an untradeable player.

Renfroe is a weak side platoon bat that we had to trade two decent prospects for because Stearns made an atrocious signing the year before. Yay!

The #16 and #17 prospect in a weak farm system and an untradeable contract for a guy who is better than Avisail Garcia, Trey Mancini, Jeff McNeil, take your pick of trade target darlings on here.

The negativity on this forum is really draining. I don't get it.

I think that says more about this forum’s trade targets than the quality of player Renfroe is. And it’s debatable whether he’s better than any of those players and if he is, he barely is.

scouting report out of college:

Lack of really explosive traits out of his breaks hurts with his route-to-route success rate, as does his sometimes limited route tree at Clemson. Has run a ton of bubbles and hitches in 2018, where his route tree was more expansive in the past. Has seen his role and pattern variety decrease due to the elite level talent around him at the position. Still, has tons of experience, recognizes coverages well and is terrific at finding space in zone to sit in.

yes, I know

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

I know throwing cold water on everything this team does is kind of your schtick, but come on.

So is Renfroe our everyday RF? Or do we find a LH OF to platoon him with?

His line against RHP last season was better than Yelich's overall line and similar to Tyrone Taylor's overall line. I imagine he will be getting the bulk of the OF starts with Yelich and Cain.

I don’t like this trade unless it’s part of a bigger picture. JBJ atleast brought elite defense and guy gave away 2 good prospects to get rid of him.

You understand we also acquired a pretty good player in this deal right?

Yes I do but that’s because you gave away 2 pretty good prospects. Probably just upset they traded binelas

The arrow was pointing up for both Binelas and Hamilton. Both have a chance to become solid major leaguers. The Brewers used good prospects to buy their way out of a bad deal. Both positives and negatives can be gleaned from the situation.

Yeah, adding Renfroe to the middle of the lineup certainly makes it look much better.

"Buying their way out of a bad deal" would be if they packaged Binelas and Hamilton with JBJ to get nothing in return. We got multiple years of an everyday RF.

Last year, Renfroe has a .777 OPS vs right-handers, and an .885 OPS vs lefties. The big difference was that he walks way more against lefties - 25BB in 208 PA vs lefties. While 19BB in 364 PA against righties. Huge difference there - and it really drives down Renfroe's OBP a lot.

In the end, his .777 OPS against righties isn't bad - but not great. But if he can do that - we'll probably trot him out there most days.

The key is can he replicate last year's numbers. His career numbers aren't as pretty.

What this trade proves is that David Stearns is not infallible. Signing Bradley was a clear miss. But instead of compounding the issue and hoping for a Bradley rebound, he's now someone else's problem. When Stearns makes mistakes, he's not above moving on from them quickly. I think that is one aspect of his management style that I like the most. Edited by Ron Robinson's Beard

This was an entertaining 5 minute watch of Renfroe.

It will be fun to have some hope for an outfield assist on balls hit to RF with runners in scoring position. That’s one thing that’s tough to watch with Yelich, he has almost no chance to make a strong throw against advancing runners.

Also worth emphasizing that offensive vs. LHP is arguably our biggest area of need this offseason, since we were fourth worst in MLB last season. Not going to find a better weapon in that regard than Renfroe, with the added bonus that he is not just a platoon guy.

Perhaps subjectively. The fact remains despite having a power bar Renfroe is going to his 4th different organization in as many years and still has two years of control left. There is a reason San Diego, Tampa and Boston were willing to move on from him, and the Brewers are going to find out why.

Pretty much a zero sum trade. Moved one flawed player with a big contract for another with a lesser contract and included two minor leaguers with promise to even it out

I don’t understand this trade from Boston’s perspective at all. Binelas and Hamilton are fine prospects but to take on JBJ’s entire salary, even as a large market, seems strange to me. Almost like they are also acknowledging a mistake they made in not re-signing him. Again, also questionable.

Overall, a plus for both teams I believe. Red Sox bring back a fan favorite who I expect to bounce back. Brewers get out of the contract and mostly replace Garcia’s bat, while also (possibly) freeing up money for other improvements.

Stearns: "There are some funds now that are freed up. (Owner) Mark (Attanasio) and the rest of our ownership group have been consistent and supportive if there's an opportunity that makes sense, we're free to discuss them and pursue them."
