Vogelbach and Curtiss non tendered

That trade for Curtiss sure did not work out for us. They gave up Peyton Henry for 4.1 innings of 12.46 ERA. Ouch. Curtiss was not eligible for free agency until 2026 and not arby eligible until 2023 so a bit surprised at this. Granted an injured player like him may never return so looks like they just wanted to cut their losses.

FWIW, Peyton hit sub 700 OPS for Miami's AAA team and enjoyed a cup of coffee with the big league club. He currently sits at #29 on their top prospect list. He didn't exactly set the world on fire.

Can anyone explain why they non-tendered Curtiss? The cost of paying him a 40-man salary and rehabbing him for a year seems negligible if they thought highly enough of him pre-injury to trade a decent prospect.

Maybe they've got a deal worked out to sign him right away on a new minors contract so this way they can get him off the 40-man?

Does that leave our 40-man roster at 36?

I agree with both non-tenders … Tellez is a tad better offensively & much better defensively than Vogelbach - & I prefer Nelson Cruz at DH

I’m sure we would all prefer Cruz but don’t see much chance that we sign him.

The best I can think of is they plan to fill up their 40-man roster with other players prior to the start of spring training when they could’ve just placed him on the 60-day IL.

Should have taken PeaveyFury up on that bet. I said Curtiss would certainly be DFAd before his second year of arbitration and he laughed at that. Even before his injury I thought all discussion of the years of control we had with him were so overblown.

Saw this Tweet from Kiley McDaniel, so maybe this is what’s going on with the Curtiss non-tender…

Quick reminder if you’re confused why a team non-tendered a player not eligible for arbitration: once-a-year chance to get a player off of the 40-man without putting them through waivers. Normally is followed by a pre-arranged minor league deal with a decent salary/incentives.

Correct yes, but 'laughed at' is a bit dramatic.

I think that saying ANYTHING 2.5 years out and claiming it to be a certainty is a poor idea.

Disappointing on Curtiss but understandable as they would be paying him for all of 2022 and then going right to arbitration. Vogelbach had some good moments but once playoffs came around really showed his limited value. Hopefully they can get an upgrade at 1B and Rowdy can be a better version of Vogelbach.

Yeah, injuries suck but they are a part of sports. Curtiss should have been a nice, cheap bullpen arm to help us not only for the '21 playoff run, but for several years into the future. Then he blew out his arm.

I guess it's better that it happened to a player in his pre-arby years than to one that we have a committed salary to, but it still hurts. I hope they can sign him to a minor league contract and hold onto him, but I understand why they non-tendered him.

While it's easy to cheer for a slugging home run hitter, non-tendering Vogelbach makes sense. He's around average for 1B bats, but any positive he has there is negated by his defense. While Tellez may not be a world-beater, he's a better player than Vogelbach, and there's really no reason to have both of them on the same roster. We're better off to find a RH bat that can play 1B on days Tellez sits, and hopefully some other positions as well. Of course, that's assuming we aren't going to find a big upgrade via trade or free agency. If we do that, then we really don't need two LH, 1B-only guys sitting on the bench.

Vogelbach was easy to root for, but he just isn't a guy that takes us to the next level offensively.

I think we saw the best that could be expected of him, but that just isn't enough.

Best of luck to him!
