dylan cozens and hoby milner think that this guy should get his own thread.

the brewers have signed rex brothers to a minor league deal and have invited him to spring training.

brothers is out of minor league options. he has been outrighted to the minor leagues before.

the brewers have five non-roster invitees for 2022 spring training.

No risk obviously, but yuck. I will be very disappointed if he makes the roster. Worst kind of reliever, a dude that walks everyone.

The Brewers have had success with these types in the past, but in the case of Brothers, he legitimately hasn't been good in 9 years. You have to go back to 2013 to find a season where he was good (other than a very small 10-inning sample in 2015). He was kind of a gas can for the Cubs last season.

But he's a lefty reliever, so that means he's roughly on life #5 of his 9 lives.

No risk. Send him to spring and evaluate from there. If he's bad, bye bye no harm no foul. The Brewers have done better with low cost relievers than most teams, I think in large part due to our analytics dept for pitching is a bit better than a majority of teams. The Cubs, with all their money, have been one of the worst with pitchers in general.

although rex brothers did finish the 2021 season on a major league roster, he falls short of six years of service time. thus, under the collective bargaining agreement set to expire, the brewers were not required to assure him an opt-out clause at the end of spring training nor a $100,000 retention bonus if they wish to keep him in the organization.

this doesn't mean that brothers didn't negotiate for an opt-out clause . . . it's just that the brewers weren't required to give him one.
