Former Brewers reliever Doug Jones has passed away.

he was one of my all time favorites. very sad

Sad. I remember watching him as a kid. His changeup was one of my favorite pitches of all time

Jones’ best year in a great career may have come in a Brewer uniform at age 40. WHIP under 0.9, 9 walks, 82 Ks, 36 saves in 37 chances. Uecker described his pitches as slow, slower, and slowest.

that 97 season was fun to watch him pitch. Devin Williams is doing similar things, but Jones did it without a change of pace fastball.

 

Couldn't repeat it in 98 and was traded for Eric Plunk.

That squad has been pretty blessed in that regard, nearly all in that 65-75 bracket.

I remember watching Doug Jones in the late 90s. Had no idea until now that his Brewer career actually spanned all the way back to the '82 team.

97 was a fun season, or as fun a season as a Brewer fan could have in those times. Brewers were as close as 2.5 games back on September 2nd.

 

Watching Jones float those slow-as-heck changeups up there that mystified batter after batter was something else.

We’ve had some great closers throughout the years but to me, 97 Jones was the most fun to watch. I wonder how many times I heard the word “junkball” that season…

I can't believe he had such a short tenure with the Brewers. I was going to post that same "he's got three pitches: slow, slower, and slowest" saying when I heard he had passed. I have such strong memories watching him that season with my Dad and us just laughing and being so entertained by big league hitters not being able to slow down to his repertoire. He was definitely a memorable and well liked guy!
