Pedro Severino Signs with Brewers 1 year 1.9 million

I like this signing because of the complement to Narvaez in 2022 and also because he is young enough to still break out. It is a long shot but could be the starter in 2023 with a cheap backup in Feliciano.

I suppose they could try to hang onto Severino, but note this is only a one-year deal.

It looks like he's still arbitration eligible and under team control for 2023: https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/milwaukee-brewers/pedro-severino-18162/

I guess when an arbitration eligible player is non-tendered they don't lose their remaining years of arbitration?

Yeah I'm pretty sure he's held to the arbitration years and he was non-tendered that made him a FA. If the Brewers are comfortable with him to pay what arb value sets him at for 2023.

As to Briggs comment for Outlanders comment:

I dont know that Id want a rookie being your #1 catcher for a staff Milw would possess. Familiarity and calling games has to take some onus there. Maybe Feliciano takes his place during 2022 as Narvaez' backup to take gain that experience. Let's just get through the offseason before overthinking 2023 today.

The thing is... Milwaukee does have a need to think to the future.

This is where the $2.1 million saved by letting Pina walk and bringing in Severino proves to be a false bargain. With Pina, you'd have continuity - and it would be an easy matter to have him serve as Feliciano's mentor while looking to deal Narvaez.

But who mentors Feliciano now? Assuming 2022 is Feliciano in AAA, we're putting a LOT on that rookie for 2023, and we're probably going to let Narvaez walk as a free agent after that season (no chance to replenish the system with a prospect or two).

Severino for the moment in 2023 when you pay his next Arb amount. That would appear the current status. It's no guarantee Feliciano even plays at the next level. The bat has some catching up to do to even become a 600+OPS. The future may be who they trade for next catcher.

The Brewers became a worse team by letting Manny Pina walk and signing this guy. But Mark A. saved a few nickels so there's that.

Severino is 6 years younger and better with the bat. Your argument seems quite ludicrous and completely not based in any sort of reality IMO.

He's not better with the bat vs. LHP, which is where Pina had value. Severino is younger. Big deal. Pina signed for 2 years. Pina is also actually a good defensive catcher as opposed to the butcher, Severino.

Your argument seems quite ludicrous and completely not based in any sort of reality IMO.

I also find it comical we are still discussing the signing of this chump over a week later while the rest of the league signs high quality FA's. But then most of you have been conditioned over the years to eating gruel so you ignore the USDA Prime ribeye that other fans get to eat.

I apologize for saying your argument is ludicrous and isn't based in reality. It is somewhat, but you are blowing it WAY out of proportion. You are trolling and getting bent out of shape about a guy who will likely catch 50-60 games. It truly isn't worth the angst. Pina is old, was pretty poor with the bat for a huge portion of the season last year, and the Brewers decided to move on. Yes, Pina was better vs. left-handed pitching in 2021, but it was only marginally. I simply don't understand how this move is ammo for you to take shots at ownership, then turn around and take shots at other fans who get the move. Pina certainly had some moments as a Brewer, but he is what he is. A backup catcher. The definition of a role player. Severino at least, based on his age, still has some perceived upside. Pina does not.

Please stop calling each other's arguments ludicrous and not based in reality. Thanks.

Also, no one here has been conditioned to do anything (that we know of) so stop with that stuff too.

This is actually a little comical.

I'd rather have Pina than Severino, but that ship has sailed...

Probably time to move on to other life changing events in the Brewers world.

I’m surprised at how much disdain there is over losing Pina and replacing him with Severino. Would I have like to keep Pina? You bet. Do I think losing him and replacing him with Severino will make that much of a difference over the course of the season. Most likely not. I’m not worried about our catching situation. Now, if our offense isn’t improved at 1B or in the outfield (really RF), then I’ll be upset as those (primarily 1B) are our biggest holes right now.

To be fair, it was only really one poster griping.

I guess I didn’t go back and check… seemed like more but maybe it was just the comment being included in replies. My bad.

Did the team ever actually announce this signing? Seems like if it wasn't finalized before the lockout it is at least in limbo if not in jeopardy.

Severino is listed on the Brewers 40 Man at MLB.com. Apparently he will be wearing number 28, Prince Pedro.

A smart way to get a jump on turning him into a better “Fielder” behind the dish :) . I’ll show myself out.
