Burnes wins Cy Young

owbc
Many years as a fan and I had doubts we'd ever have anyone win it.

Ever?

So the last Brewer Cy Young winner had an ERA over 3.30, a WHIP over 1.5, a FIP over 4, a 1.03 K to BB ratio, and less than 4 and a half Ks per 9. :laughing :laughing :laughing

My how the game has changed.

I have3n't looked at any stats...I assume he won a lot of games? Many more than Corbin?

He was 18-6 and had averaged over seven innings per game. Wins and innings pitched were much bigger things back then.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

I'm a 55 year old librarian and I'm wearing a Corbin Burnes t-shirt* to my professional job today because my team has a Cy Young winner for the first time since I was in high school.

This is the shirt, which seems tailor made to my interests: https://rotowear.com/products/mr-burnes-is-excellent-shirt

*Also a cardigan, because it's November and I'm a librarian. ;)

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

Burnes would have been lucky to get a single vote if voters evaluated candidates the way they did 20-30 years ago. Urias would have won in a landslide with Wainwright, Buehler, and Scherzer all receiving healthy vote totals. A few people might have thrown Burnes a 4th or 5th place vote for winning the ERA title.

Also -- that is an awesome shirt hawing :)

Vuck only had 2 more starts/appearances in that 1982 Cy Young season than Burnes in 2021 - yet he pitched 56+ more innings than Burnes despite the fact Burnes routinely worked deep into games by this era's starting pitching standards. That is the most insane stat comparison to me. 9 complete games to none.

The craziest stat for me in that Vuke Cy season is the 105 K / 102 BB in those 223 innings. Adjusted for league average in 1982 Vuke struck out 13% fewer batters than the average pitcher & walked 26% more batters than the average pitcher.

For comparison, Burnes struck out 41% more batters & walked 46% fewer batters than the average pitcher in 2021.

It's kind of crazy looking at the stats in comparison to today. Obviously WAR wasn't a thing back then, but of the 9 AL pitchers to receive Cy Young votes that year, Vuk was tied for the lowest WAR of them all at 2.8.

If this vote happened today, it appears Dave Stieb would've won by a landslide, but instead he finished 4th.

Stieb had 19 complete games (to Vuck's 9), 5 CGSHO (Vuck 1), 288 IP (Vuck 223), significantly more K's, significantly less walks, even a lower ERA which was of course a much bigger deal stat back then.

But Vuckovich went 18-6 and Stieb was only 17-14

Stieb was only 17-14

While pitching for a team that went 78-84. Team records probably shouldn't play a part in how the Cy Young is determined, but they likely do.

Vuke was at 5.1 runs per game in support versus only 3.9 runs per game for Stieb.

Run support shouldn't decide who the best pitcher is & luckily for Burnes we've moved onto better evaluation methods.

Not going to lie, I was pretty worried he wouldn't win. I was afraid he would end up with too many 3rd or worse ranked votes to bring him down. COVID and lack of innings were two things I thought he might get docked for and ultimately risk losing the award.

I just assumed he wouldn't, so this is a nice little surprise!

Stunned he got it, but his numbers were impressive. Wheeler certainly had a case for it, and Brewers always seem to be overlooked when there's a choice to be made. When looking at the voting, the biggest surprise was picking up a vote from one of the LA writers.

As for the last time it happened. Even as a 13yo die hard Brewers fan, I didn't think Vuckovich was all that good and didn't deserve the award.
