I did not expect to beat them, but I didn't expect to get blown out of the gym. Still it was a successful first season under Smart and look forward to next year. Go Zags!

Good first year for Smart kind of a bad ending.  This team was way better than what I thought they would be.  Yesterday's game kind of sucked but it was a bad matchup for Marquette.  UNC does everything good that Marquette was weak on and UNC exploited those weaknesses.  

Hopefully we see some improvements in the team next year.  The rebounding needs to get better.

Two teams trending in opposite directions. Marquette peaked at the wrong time, it felt like. 

Still, a great start to the Shaka era, as others have said. Looking forward to MU becoming a consistent tourney presence and deep run threat.

So latest newsies:

• Jay Wright is retiring. Guess he was afraid of Shaka.  A big loss for the conference.
• Justin Lewis has declared for the draft.  Hired an NCAA approved agent, so has the option to return.  Odds are high he's gone.
• Greg Elliott has entered the transfer portal.  Don't believe anyone expected him to be back, but perhaps surprising he's going to play a sixth year in college. 
• 2022 commit from NAIA champion and POY Zach Wrightsil from Loyola-New Orleans, in for his final season.  Any history of NAIA transfers succeeding in major conference NCAA, and in their first season?
• 2023 commit from 4 star/top 100 SG Zaide Lowery out of Missiouri.

It is a big loss for the conference. When this new conference got started up, the coaches were pretty stable, but 3 new coaches next season, which has been about the average turnover of late.

From what I have read, Lewis could be a 2nd round pick. I think if you know you are a 1st round pick you go, but to leave to be a 2nd, is silly.

 

Pretty excited about the 2 new guys coming in. Lowery is a top 100 2023 player and Wrightstil will bring a lot of leadership to a young team that they will be lacking with Elliot, Kurth, and Morsell leaving.
