2020-2021 stats

1. Corbin Burnes: 2.34 ERA, 1.74 FIP, 9.9 fWAR

2. Brandon Woodruff: 2.70 ERA, 3.03 FIP, 6.8 fWAR

1. Jacob deGrom: 1.63 ERA, 1.67 FIP, 7.5 fWAR

2. Max Scherzer: 2.81 ERA, 3.11 FIP, 7.2 fWAR

Projected 2022 salaries

1. Corbin Burnes (age 27): $4.0M

2. Brandon Woodruff (age 29): $7.1M

1. Jacob deGrom (age 34): $33.5M

2. Max Scherzer (age 38): $43+M

:laughing :laughing :laughing

Why the laugh? The most appropriate thing to say about Burnes/Woodruff in light of the money that deGrom and Scherzer are making is what the Indians owner said about Lindor a few winters ago: "Enjoy Them". They will both be gone from Milwaukee at or before they attain six years of service time.

Moreover, with the cost of quality starting pitching starting to creep into the upper 30s to lower 40s of millions of dollars in AAV, and the player's union looking to alter the arbitration process or cut the 6 year service time requirement in the next CBA. The razor's edge the Brewers live on to be competitive is only going to grow slimmer and slimmer.

Do Max Scherzer's great grandchildren really need him to make another $130M so they can eat? I have no problem with players getting paid but some of these contracts are ridiculous. If guys who already have $100M+ in the bank are going to be signing another contract the size of the GDP of a small nation then a certain percentage of that should be designated for charity.

Scherzer is a big shot in the Players Union. Of course, he doesn't need the money but the Player's Union isn't going to accept the status quo. Rather they are going to push for more and more to pave the way for the guys coming behind them. It's the same logic that lead Yasmani Grandal to taking a one year deal with the Brewers, to raise up the AAV for the catcher's coming behind him.

Which is collusion from the players side but whatever. I remember in Tom Glavine's book he talked about wanting to take a lesser deal to stay with the Braves but he was worried what the union would think about it so he signed with the Mets. Who cares? Play where you want to play.

Corey Seager was the gem of this free agent class, IMO. I know he’s been oft-injured, but when healthy he’s such an incredibly talented hitter. Good for the Rangers, I guess at least we can take solace in fact he’s moving to the American League.

I'll take shortstops for 300 million please.

It's kind of humorous to me in a way, how much of a slap in the face to fans this kind of is. The team can afford to invest 300 million into a single player, while the player is set for 300 lifetimes. But don't worry, the impending work stoppage is sure to get all these differences ironed out so things are fair for both sides :)

Am I missing something? Seager seems like the most overrated player in baseball, and now that's confirmed by this deal. You give $300+ million to a perennial MVP candidate, not a guy who hasn't managed a >4.0 fWAR season since 2017.

I guess age really is that big of a factor for front offices. A couple extra years in your 20s is hard to overstate in terms of free agency value. (Also a strong argument for the MLBPA to overhaul the arbitration system.)

Well it depends on how you grade his defense. Statcast and UZR think he has been really bad. DRS thinks he was about average.

Among all position players he has the 26th highest fWAR (23.7) in baseball since 2015 despite having played in far less games (at least 100+ games less) than everyone else on the list other than Aaron Judge and Trea Turner. For him going forward it will be about his health, but I don’t think there is much question about the talent.

And since 2018 he has the 63rd highest fWAR in baseball, tied with Lorenzo Cain.

I'm not denying he's a fantastic player, this kind of mega-deal just seems like way too much to me. I'll be interested to see what Trevor Story gets. In my opinion he is significantly better than Seager, but I'll bet he has to settle for a much smaller deal.

Seager has basically played the equivalent of two full seasons over the past four seasons. During that time, he's put up fWAR of 9.2. The two years when he was able to play a full slate of games, his yearly fWAR was 6 or better. Offensively he hasn't lost anything but has on the defensive side.

If one assumes he will be able to play a full season, than I think the contract can be justified given his age and in light of the contracts being passed out this offseason. Not sure that's a good assumption however.

Crazy nuts deal… and the guy is hurt too often. 10 years? Guaranteed money. And the team still can’t pitch.

At this rate let’s unload woodruff or burnes for the gold mine that’ll come. My god.

I’m game to trade one of them to restock the farm and fill holes at 3B and 1B. If they change arby rules and give FA to any 30 year old, we have Wiody for just one more season. Trading him would then almost be a must less risk losing him to FA.

That's just insane. Honestly, that needs to change. How about if you sign with another team your former contract is voided.

The reason why he is getting that extra money is because he and the Nationals agreed to defer some of his earnings………everyone knew this would be happening. Brewers have done this with players as well and my guess is it’s driven more by the clubs then the players.
