The Brewers, in general, can't afford these sort of short-term rentals.

Which prospect traded by Stearns & company for a short term rental has had a detrimental long term effect on the team?

I can't think of any off the top of my head which would seem to imply they both can afford it & it is a sound, well thought out strategy.

I would suggest dealing away Competitive Balance picks is akin to dealing prospects for short-term help.

In that case MKE dealt its 2019 Comp A (#39, eventually #41) pick to Texas for LHP Alex Claudio..

The pick for Texas was 3B Davis Wendzel. While Wendzel hasn't made the majors yet, it could be debated that any player taken after #40 in that draft COULD have been the Brewer pick. There are a couple of talents in the next handful of rounds (thru the 5th) that would look nice in the MKE system/ on the MKE team.

The Brewers were reportedly interested in Marcus Semien last offseason. After taking a one year deal last year he just signed a 7-year deal with the Rangers for $175 million.

That’s a lot of money for age 31-38 of a guy with only 2 exceptional seasons on his resume. Especially for a non-contender like the Rangers.

Semien got “shortstop” $ but Filefa is definitely a better SS than him. It’ll be interesting to see if Semien gets SS or stays at 2B

Jon Gray signs with Rangers for 4-years, and $56 million. I actually think that’s a pretty good deal from Texas’s side of things. I think Gray still has a pretty high ceiling, and look forward to seeing what he can do outside of Denver.

Former Reds pitcher and pinch hitter Michael Lorenzen signed (1-year, $7 million) with the Angels as a starting pitcher with hopes of getting some at bats as well. The Angels are cornering the market on two-way players it appears.

Via Ken Rosenthal:

Growing indications that Scherzer is headed to Mets, sources tell The Athletic. NYM “making progress,” per Joel Sherman.

Now from Jon Morosi:

Max Scherzer and the #Mets are close to finalizing a multiyear deal, source confirms.

A record payroll and the Mets are going to finish third or fourth in the NL East :laughing

Given the cursedness of the franchise, I bet deGrom is not healthy again next year and they therefore spend $40+ million on Scherzer to effectively tread water pitching-wise.

If the Rangers planned to spend big in free agency & try not to lose 102 games again, why'd they deal Gallo for a trio of kids with 2023-24 ETAs?

I like that they are trying to win, or at least trying not to lose 100 games again. It’s good for baseball. It’s also good for the Brewers since it takes some FAs away from teams that might actually be a threat to us.

What I like about the Mets is that Cohen doesn’t care about losing money. It has a better chance of working, at least for a few years, due to the sheer volume of talent being acquired.

The reality is that most of this is probably happening to gain leverage in CBA negotiations.

I don't know anything about the return they got, but if they were looking to sell high it seems like they timed it pretty brilliantly.

Sure Gallo struggled in his couple months with the Yankees, but Steamer still has him projected for a 123 wRC+ & 3.5 WAR next year which would make him the 2nd best player on the Rangers by a pretty solid margin over Josh Jung (118 wRC+ | 2.2 WAR) or Kiner Falafa (92 wRC+ | 2.2 WAR).

Even if they did sell high on Gallo, it would be one of the few moves they've gotten right in the last five years. Since 2017 they've won 305 games (26th most) while spending around 625 million on payroll. Over that same time the Pirates have won 306 games while spending around 330 million on payroll. Kind of miraculous Daniels is still POBO after a run like that.

They're gonna need to spend another 225 million in FA just to sniff a .500 projection for next year, which is probably still only good enough for 4th in the ALW.
