Brewers acquire Brosseau from Rays

The amount of excitement trades like this bring a lot of posters on Brewerfan.net, tells you all you need to know, really. Trades like this aren't needle movers in the least. No wonder Stearns is so desired in baseball circles, when he's making franchise changing moves like this. Someone wake me when he acquires some actual talent via trade or signs a Castellanos or something.

Boy you can sound dumb. While the player himself may not excite you, how about a move to non tender an Arby player saving a few mil that just...hear me out on this... may be used to sign somebody that does. I would think Vogelbach is on his way to being non-tendered. You have the RH compliment for Tellez and Wong as mentioned in MLBTR. Kinda fits exactly where Vogelbach doesn't on the roster.

Vogelbach and Tellez are redundant - and to be honest, the Crew should try to trade Vogelbach.

The return might be a DSL player or three, but I'm fine with that. Remember Adam Lind?

Can Brosseau legitimately play SS? Can he eliminate the need for Urias as the backup SS?

I could have covered up the poster name, just read the post, and I would have bet my house, car, and every last penny to my name on who the author was.

This is what I want to know. Urias as the backup SS is not a good plan.

Love the acquisition though. I have no doubt he will help the team.

Edit: It seems as though he has never played SS in the majors, so I'm guessing not. And through small major leagues samples does not seem to be a good defender anywhere other than 3rd and 1st.

I'm sure there's more minor league data, but I don't know where to find it.

There was no excitement expressed in the posts preceding yours. You pretending there was to push your agenda tells you all you need to know, really.

No single move changes a franchise, it is the combination of all moves made. In the four years before Stearns & company got here the Brewers won the 21st most games in MLB with a .474 W%. In the six years since the Brewers have won the 8th most games in MLB with a .537 W%.

That is why he is desired in baseball circles.

Had a bad offensive season last season but was pretty good the 2 seasons prior

Replacement for Jace?

Hopefully we never see Pablo Reyes again

Pablo had some big moments last year, why the hate for him?

I don't get it either. I don't want Reyes starting, or even getting significant playing time, but the fact that he's versatile, a good defender, and doesn't absolutely suck with the bat makes him a decent guy to have hanging around on the 40 man. People seem to think it's easy to just stash a bunch of .800 OPS dudes on the bottom of the roster, and it just doesn't work that way. Guys like Reyes are what you have when you get a bunch of injuries or just "need a guy", and he wasn't *that* bad, as long as you don't plan on him playing every day.

Brosseau intrigues me. I'm not expecting him to change our fortunes but we got him for basically nothing. Here's hoping.

Chill out or post somewhere else. Your condescending tone is obnoxious.

I promise to wake you when Stearns signs Castellanos if you promise to stay sleep until then.

Brosseau has only played about 6% of his career innings in the OF, 56 of 892, so probably more of a 6th/7th OF behind Yelich, Cain, Taylor, JBJ & whoever else they acquire this offseason.

He's played primarily 2B (404 innings, +4 DRS) & 3B (328 innings, +4 DRS) with a litte 1B (100 innings, +3 DRS) also mixed in.

A plus defender at all three non SS infield spots with a career 131 wRC+ against LHP seems like a pretty good fit with our current IF group.

The positional flexibility combined with a distinct platoon split is why I think this makes a ton of sense. The Brewers now have a player they can stick into their lineup at either 1B or 2B versus LHPs.

These are the kind of moves we should be making. Not flashy but they should improve the team.

Why not both?

I love this trade because it really opens up the offseason. We can put ourselves out there and know we have Peterson and Broussoeu as a safety net for almost everywhere. Someone offers a ton for Wong early, done. Trade Hader and get prospects only, no problem. Go big and get a big bat or 2, still good.

Neither is a SS though.

Obviously lots of time to figure it out, but it has to be figured out.

With Brosseau in the mix I think the perfect bench piece to complement him would be free agent Brad Miller. They can both competently play anywhere on the infield (with shortstop being a bit of a stretch if it was more than a few games), and their platoon splits are completely opposite of one another.

Brosseau vs. LHP (229 PA’s for career): .277 BA / .336 OBP / .515 SLG / .851 OPS

Miller vs. RHP (297 PA’s in 2021): .244 BA / .354 OBP / .488 SLG / .842 OPS

With those two as bench options they’d basically be able to give regular rest around the infield while maintaining a >.800 OPS caliber player in your lineup. If they had to cover an injury to Wong or Urias for a short time they could do so without much expected drop-off in offensive production. The Brewers would likely need to stash someone in Triple-A that could fill in longer term if Adames went down.

I sure wish Stearns would stop trading pitching though. We are in serious short supply in the minors with the past few trades and the focus on hitting in the draft and international signings.

I don't know Riefert. But, if we can get a usable piece for a bullpen guy from A+ because the other team has a roster crunch, that seems like a trade you make and fill in the minors with whatever retread arms you need to to complete the roster.

I do think Reifert is being undersold a bit, if not here then elsewhere in discussions of this trade. A large chunk of the bad walk rate can be traced to a stretch where he pulled a Jimmy Nelson and saw his walk rate shoot up for a stretch after getting a midseason promotion. From July on he was I believe between 9% and 10%, which while not ideal is pretty standard for short relievers. I think you could make a good case he was the Brewers pitching prospect below AAA most likely to eventually reach the majors. His 2021 is basically what we're hoping Abner Uribe does next year. And although I gave him his one vote in the poll, I think he still deserved a spot in the top 25 before this trade happened.

If you think Brosseau will bounce back, it still makes sense from a Brewers perspective, but I think the Rays did this for more than just the 40-man spot, as has been speculated elsewhere.

I like the pickup of Brousseau. He’s a guy we have bandied about for years. I suspect Jace will be replaced unless there is an unexpected injury.

They love Jace. I doubt he goes anywhere. He was actually quite solid with the bat last season as well, so it really isn't a case of "Counsell loves utility guys who cant hit."
