Packer 2021 Team Discussion 2.0

It doesn’t bother me that MLF hasn’t won a COY award (or Holmgren and McCarthy for that matter). Having a HOF QB is like playing with a stacked deck in the eyes of most voters, even if you could selectively argue there have been years where they’ve each done a fine job navigating challenges.

The list of Johnny-Come-Latelies on the COY is laughable though:

Lindy Infante

Wayne Fontes

Ray Rhodes

Dom Capers

Jim Fassel

Jim Haslet

Dick Jauron

Mike Smith

Jason Garrett

Matt Nagy

Often these coaches in both sports win COY because they surprise everyone and have success. :laughing

I have a feeling Belichick in NE will win it this year.

Fontes got the Lions to the NFC championship game, that pretty much makes him the front runner for coach of the entire 90’s decade. Who has ever done more with less?

Tough to argue, but Fontes did have Barry Sanders.

Jim Caldwell went 36-28 during his Lions tenure. His worst season was 7-9 and he was fired after consecutive 9-7 seasons.

The Lions have to be the least successful pro franchise in North America. I always thought Sanders was a bit of a coach killer, those big losses he took dancing around were like sacks. Just looked out of curiosity and their QB in that one playoff win was Erik Kramer lol. Caldwell was a victim of expectations, will be interesting to see with the Rams if it is just the Lions or if Stafford is a loser.

Jones cracked 1,000 yards from scrimmage today & Dillon should get there next week which would make them the first RB duo of the Favre/Rodgers era to both top 1,000 in the same season. Some of the closer duos were...

1993: Edgar Bennett 1,007 | Darrell Thompson 783

1994: Edgar Bennett 1,169 | Reggie Cobb 878

1996: Edgar Bennett 1,075 | Dorsey Levens 792

2011: Ryan Grant 827 | James Starks 794

2015: James Starks 993 | Eddie Lacy 946

The two things that stood out going back through thirty years of GB RBs was (1) how much of a workhorse Ahman Green was, racking up 10,870 yards from scrimmage with 73 TD from 2000-06 and (B) just how neglected the position was for stretches at a time. Glad that Gute/MLF have been a little more proactive in their approach to the position.

To find the last GB RB duo to both top 1,000 yards from scrimmage in the same season you have to turn the clock all the way back to that classic 1980 backfield of Eddie Lee Ivery & Gerry Ellis.

I remember a game where Ellis and Ivory both had 100 yards, another Packer mark that has probably rarely been done since. I think it was after that game that I read an article on how teams that run 40 times or more win like 90% of the time. 40 rushes! Times have changed..

Green was my favorite Packer of all time. Just an absolute beast in his prime. He had such a rare combo of speed and power. He has a 2-3 year window where it sometimes took 3 guys to bring him down. I remember a play in Minnesota where he has hit for a multiple yard loss, flipped a guy off his back, then ran across the field to the other sideline and turned it into a big gain. I loved him.

I absolutely loved him too. It jacked me up when he would get low and literally run someone over

Snapper, I think you and I are about the same age, but I don’t have the same fondness for Green. I’m guessing that’s because he didn’t win a championship in 1996 or 2010 and those years in between are slowing fading from my sports memory. No doubt, he was a good player.

My favorite memory is how he would seek out contact. He'd run through the hole into the second level and instead of trying to avoid the safety, he'd go straight at him knowing there was a 75% chance he could run him over and keep going without pursuit being able to catch up.

Which would you have an easier time stomaching? Tom Brady comes out to midfield to give a consoling handshake to Aaron Rodgers after defeating us in the NFC Championship Game next month, or ....Mike McCarthy comes out to give the consoling handshake?

I’d take losing to Brady over McCarthy.

I’ll always have a fondness for McCarthy, but my dislike of Dallas runs deep. With Brady, I’ve accepted that he lives a charmed existence and is likely to best us (even if he throws two 4th quarter INTs again).

Same preference, but very different reasons.

Brady has only cost Green Bay - at most - one Super Bowl.

The Packers announced Monday that five more players had been placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list. It included offensive lineman Ben Braden, linebacker Tipa Galeai, wide receiver Amari Rodgers, linebacker Ty Summers and practice squad defensive lineman RJ McIntosh.

Not big names by any stretch but to lose and offensive linemen right now is still huge. All could still have a chance to play Sunday.

MVS likely to be back this Sunday, too.

Is that cause or effect? You're up solidly, you run the ball. You're behind late, you pass.

At the time, the early 80’s, many teams were still run first and if it worked they kept doing it so I think getting to 40 carries probably happened more. I would guess the winning percentage is still high if not even higher now when you hit that number as like you say you run more when ahead now.

So more cause back then and effect now?
