well this would be something

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

The big question would be whether he's got anything left in the tank, or have injuries eroded his skills to the point where he's just another guy? The Browns couldn't find any takers before the trade deadline, which leads me to believe that most other NFL contenders think he's no longer a big enough talent to be worth the potential trouble.

Or it just means nobody wants to give up assets midyear for a malcontent that they think is likely to be cut so he can play where he wants to play. It doesn't really help New Orleans or something if he doesn't want to play there. He may just want to pile-on in Tampa or something.

I'd take him in a heartbeat though. We take flyers (fliers?) on far less talented players. He's not going to be expensive, so just do it.

Had more to do with teams knowing he was headed out and not wanting to be saddled with the rest of this years contract

If he clears waivers I believe he can sign for the league minimum left this year, and be a free agent this offseason. Ill take a motivated OBJ for 2 months

I'm not against the move off hand. I would just warn that expectations need to be held in check. I see people comparing this situation to the Packers grabbing Andre Rison off the scrap heap in 1996. It's important to remember that, other than a huge play in SB31, Rison didn't really have that much of an impact. Also, when he was signed, the team had already lost their #1 WR in Brooks to a blown out knee, and #2 in Freeman to a busted wrist (which he later came back to play with). Don Beebe was the de facto #1 at the time, with Derrick Mayes, Anthony Morgan and Terry Mickens also getting reps. Today's WR room is significantly in better shape.

Rison didn't make a huge impact because Antonio Freeman came back. He was a fill-in against St. Louis in a game the Packers badly needed to win (and were trailing at half) that year to get off a 2-game skid during a rash of injuries. Plus it is a bit jumpy to say "other than a huge play in the championship game" a guy didn't do a whole lot, esp. for mid-year WW fodder.

That said they aren't really the same kind of acquisition for the reasons you stated. If he clears waivers I would still 100% sign him.

This offense could be even more fun if you have OBJ and MVS taking the tops off defenses while Adams works over the middle and Jones is leaking into the flats. Would be a nightmare to defend. This seems pretty low risk type of move that I wouldn't mind them taking a swing at - if he comes in and doesn't perform or if he causes issues in the locker room, then you can send him out as fast as you brought him in. The upside potential is great.

As with all Packers free agency moves though, I'll believe it when I see him actually in GB.

Just saying that there would definitely be a contingent of fans who expect OBJ to come in and immediately be #1B to Adams' #1A, while in reality, OBJ's upside at this point is probably as a hybrid of what Lazard and MVS already provide.

I could resurrect my post where I analyzed the SB winners (and losers) for the last 20 years, but I won't bother. The spoiler is that QBs on their rookie contract comprise a minority percentage of SB winning and losing teams. And most QBs in the last 20 years that won the SB on their rookie contract won it on the final year of it (off the top of my head, only Wilson and Brady won prior to the final year and only 6 rookie contract QB winners in total - Brady twice).

The point is that even QBs that are initially "ready" take time to actually develop into SB winners.

This is a little misleading because Tom Brady and Peyton Manning have won like half of these games, so you're not really comparing apples to apples. Manning won two. A lot of these guys were just repeat winners with long careers in the league. 6 is still quite a few over time frame when you figure a lot of the veteran QBs that they're up against are generational HOF quarterbacks, Brees, Brady, Rodgers, Manning, Manning, etc.

It's obviously a tremendous advantage to be able to save money at the most expensive position and invest elsewhere in the team, it would be illogical to say otherwise, regardless of the raw numbers of appearances by rookie QBs.

And for the most part, NFL quarterbacks compete at this level much earlier in their career than years ago. Redshirting for 3 years like Rodgers did is almost unheard of now.

That is because the team picking them almost always sucks, though. And someone usually need the guy to play well to avoid being fired.

At this point, given the weird direction this season has taken this past week or so...with the defense playing as well as it is...why not? I'm all popcorn if this does indeed happen. Does it? I think it depends on how much A-Rod wants him in town. If he does, I think it happens. In those same rumors discussing his preferred destination, another Packers writer surmises it would mean Amari Rogers is the odd man out. If that's the case, considering he clearly isn't ready for the Big Show, sign me up.

I’ve been a pretty patient Packer fan the past 10 years, but wouldn’t mind if they just went full scorched Earth with an angry Rodgers and an angry OBJ. If he rehabs his image, the Packers could get an easy comp pick for him in the off-season.

Lost players that are picked up during a season do not count toward comp picks, fyi.

No, its because teams need to make a decision after year 3. For first round picks, the 5th year option needs to be picked up or refused after year 3. For other rounds, its the last chance to get an extension before you enter the franchise tag arena of Kirk Cousins. The 5th year option is still a sizable amount of money for a QB (over $18 million I think now) so you are basically at nearly commitment level. If you don't pick up the option then you again are at the mercy of the franchise tag after year 4.

You really need that 1st round QB to be starting by year 2 to even hope to be able to evaluate him fully by the end of year 3. Choose wrong and you have $20-30 million on your cap you are trying to kill off if he is bad or you now need to to try to work out a deal with a QB who is looking at getting franchise tag money for one year after you thought you were going to move on and he performed.

And that "decision" is usually something like Nick Foles or Trevor Lawrence. So yeah...it is at least partially because they suck. They are typically not picking between a draft pick and the MVP.

Packers fined $300k and Rodgers and Lazard each fined $14,650.

That seems really light. We should consider ourselves fortunate. Fire up the printer. The Packers need to sell 1,200 shares of stock to cover their fine.

No, it seems exactly right. The NFL doesn't really care...glad the punishment reflected that.

I'm sure they care in as much as it hurts the public perception and viewership and product sales.

I'm sure they'd just as soon rather have not had this incident go down the way it did. there's always the perception that stars like Rodgers and Brady get preferential treatment and things like this don't help.

Does it actually do this? The reaction of State Farm is very telling to me. Let it blow over and not pick a side because there are probably just as many people who hold Rodgers as their new ideological hero.

I was at Disney this past weekend just wearing a generic Packers hoodie and I had a few random people shout out "Rodgers is a God" and "No Vaccine!" It's obvious what side most of the media is going to take but I don't think the NFL public is nearly as one-sided.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if Rodgers saw an uptick in jersey sales.
