Cubs claim Miley on waivers

Six other teams (D-Backs, Orioles, Rangers, Pirates, Nationals, Marlins) must’ve passed on claiming him and his $10 million team option before he got to the Cubs. I know there are a lot of good starting pitching options on the free agent market this year, but it seems like the Cubs are getting Miley at a decent value. If he does anything close to what he provided last season they’ll be able to flip him at the deadline for a nice return.
Not just “at Night” anymore.

Good move by the Cubs. He's got 1 yr / $10M left on his contract, which is nothing for them even if he fails to perform. He posted a 2.9 WAR season in 2021, so he should help out in a rotation that is really thin, and they should be able to flip him at the deadline for some prospect help for their rebuild.

The Reds are a joke. They seriously couldn't find anyone to trade him to and instead put him on waivers?

That Moustakas deal is looking worse and worse for the Reds I am glad the Brewers passed on that disaster.

Could have just been wearing down after a shortened 2020, but Miley was pretty bad down the stretch for the Reds posting 42 IP of 5.14 ERA / 5.12 FIP over his last eight starts compared to 121 IP of 2.75 ERA / 3.57 FIP over his first twenty starts.

Either way it seems like at this early juncture the Brewers & Cardinals will be competing for the division in 2022, the Cubs & Reds will be competing for 3rd place and the Pirates will prolly still be dwelling in the cellar.

This is from the first page, and the first page only, of Redszone's thread on Miley:

Ok, go ahead and kill everyone in charge.

Good lord. Embarrassing.

Absurd. Just indefensible.

Sell the team.

Inexcusable

I, for one, have been enjoying the Great Alignment.

Willful Uncompetitiveness

This organization makes Scrooge look thrifty.

I’m not understanding the logic. Could have brought back a prospect or two.

This is straight up stupid. How did he even wind up on waivers, shouldn't declining his option have made him a free agent?

Just absolutely inexcusable decision here.

I’m about done as a fan.

What a giant middle finger to the fans.

But hey, at least the Reds have 4 mascots.

Just absolutely embarrassing

I love me a good message board meltdown. But it is odd that they didn't pick up the option and trade him for something, anything! Right?

The Reds continue to be a dumpster fire franchise.

I wouldn't call them a dumpster fire. They are a team in transition which primarily stems from the fact their last GM (Dick Williams) was under pressure to win which in turn resulted in Williams bringing in a bunch players (Bauer, Miley, Moustakas, Castellanos, Akiyama, etc.) and that group didn't get it done. Williams then left the organization and now they're cleaning up his mess.

To be completely fair, Jonathan India, Jesse Winker and Joey Votto are arguably the best players in the Division at their respective positions. Tyler Stephenson (11th overall in 2015) looks to be a player on the rise (also explaining the trade of Tucker Barnhart). Plus, Sonny Gray, Mahle, and Castillo are no slouches in the rotation.

On top of that, they still have Nick Senzel (2nd overall in 2016) trying to break out as well as SPs Hunter Greene (2nd overall in 2017), and Nick Lodolo (7th overall in 2019) close major league ready.

If the Reds reallocate some payroll to their bullpen they could be a strong club in 2022.

With Miley they figured they would rather have the 10 million in flexibility than rolling with a finesse lefty who will be 35 on opening day next year. Not the most ridiculous idea I've heard, although they could have tried to trade him first though.

I'm not sure what their payroll situation is, but I don't think this is necessarily a rebuild/tank type move. They are still going to be competitive next season like they were for most of 2021. The loss of Miley will likely be more than canceled out by Castillo not having another down season.

The Reds have essentially had four eras since the Castellini ownership group came in...

2006-09: 304-344 (26th, down in the dumps)

2010-13: 357-291 (7th, glory years)

2014-18: 343-467 (30th, deeper in the dumps)

2019-21: 189-195 (16th, all in on mediocrity)

Add it all up & they are 1,193-1,297 (22nd) under current ownership & 532-662 (27th) since their last full season playoff appearance in 2013.

The Reds are supposedly looking to cut payroll. Castillo is also a hot name in the trade market he could be traded at some point this off season. If the Reds could trade Moustakas they would right now for just about anything if the other team is taking on all of his contract.

The Reds won't be adding significantly to payroll this off season. Probably will only add small contracts on short-term deals.

I wouldn't be surprised to see them trade Gray also.

I think the Reds got really hurt by 2020. They had some pieces and decided that would be their "all in" year, so they probably went well over budget to sign a few players. Then Covid hit, the season was shortened, and there were no fans in the stands. I'd imagine that the Reds owners lost a ton of money, and are still reeling from it.
