Brewers got Gott

Bit of a head scratcher MLB signing, isn't it? Guy hasn't really been great at all of his stops. Clearly, our scouting department must like some of his peripherals and think they can fix some things? Seems like this would have been more of a minor league signing guy with an invite to ST, but what do I know?

This shouldn’t be a surprise, good or bad. This is what the Brewers do. Find guys with good stuff but not so great results and put them in the pitching lab for some time and see if they can be fixed.

Exactly. I'm surprised that people are disappointed/surprised/questioning these type of signings because so many of them have worked out over the past few years. This is what we do. Some don't work out, some do. And the "do" ones typically work out really well.

the 40-man roster is currently full, so presume that this deal is pending a physical, and will be announced after mlb players are able to declare free agency.

trevor gott appears to be out of minor league options, and has been outrighted to the minor leagues before.

If it's truly a split contract, then we should expect Mr. Gott to be with the organization for the season as such players tend to stay around even after a DFA and outright, earning the minor league rate stipulated in the split contract. Spangenberg, Petricka, Nieuwenhuis and Healy had split contracts somewhat recently.

Seems to have a great curveball but not so much on his FB. In 2019 he threw far more changeups with mild success that could be your Brewer pitching lab focus. We'll see.

If you are talking velocity, the guy averages 95-96 on his FB, and can pump it up to 98. Velocity isn't an issue. Command is.

Yeah not on velocity just the value that pitch has given him in his career which is just about negative runs each season. I think what the lab is going to do is have him pitch more of a secondary pitch they believe is valuable and less of the pitch that isn't so much. BSavant did have an overlay on a prior season where his slider seemed to finish in a very small radius or controlled. Just that it's a very small sample, smaller than that changeup. I just think from some of what we have seen a changeup seems to be used more often among the pitching, so I assume that is where they go versus that slider.

An effective change should theoretically make his fastball more effective as well.

(I will consciously choose not to make another low-hanging 'Gott' joke. Man, they are literally right there...every post?)

I still remember the Donavon Hand era. The article titles wrote themselves every day.
