When you have success, the guys making that success possible are going to get offers. I just hope Attanasio is able to convince Stearns to sign a nice, long extension.

Yeah, there is no reason not to try and lock him up...

It's a GM job. They're all appealing to a huge pool of people so there is always a good candidate out there. Picking the one is harder. There are a thousand wonderboy scouts and special counsel/assistant coffee runners who could be great GMs and would kill to be with the Brewers. You don't have to hire an established GM to hire a good one.

I agree you don't need to hire an established GM. Brewers didn't last time and did pretty darn well. Stearns when hired had control of the baseball operations. Whomever the GM is, Stearns / Attansanio will still have the final say on transactions.

IF (and I mean IF) Matt Arnold departs for the Mets job, this would be the time to either lock in a young up n coming mgmt person already in the organization or a young up n coming mgmt person from another organization that seems to be a feeder system for other teams (ie someone from Tampa or CLE).

Good time to bring in fresh ideas and new way to look at/ do things..

To be honest, I think it is kind of crappy to not allow Arnold the chance to interview for a POBO position. It'd be one thing if it was a lateral move but this could be a chance to run a team which Arnold hopefully won't have here for awhile

How can they, it’s a promotion.

Yeah, it's my understanding that if it is a promotion, the Brewers have no choice but to let the Mets speak to him...

I read somewhere yesterday that it is very possible that Arnold has language in his contract that bars him from seeking a promotion somehow. I think this is simply a way for the Brewers to get some sort of compensation from the Mets for Arnold.

Teams have the right to turn down permission for outside interviews for any job — even promotions — unless the employee has in their contract that the club has to grant permission. Though obviously in many cases permission is granted.

Maybe i'm confusing football and baseball....

Interesting...

I did not know that.

Is it? Alderson is still going to be the head shot caller. It would likely be a lateral move for Arnold. Only instead of answering to David Stearns, he'll be answering to Sandy Alderson.

Yeah, I would agree. Until Alderson retires (imminent), he's the boss.

Maybe he would retire if they want Arnold bad enough. I know he wants to retire.

Edit: Of course it's the Mets, so they may want to hire Arnold and then hire a POBO above him. :laughing

Good, if Stearns does leave, it will be great to have a guy like Arnold step in and hopefully not miss a beat...

Makes me wonder if Arnold knows something the rest of us don't...

The love for DS here(and quite frankly all over this board) is really something. *EDITED* You'll never get me to say he's NOT a good GM, there's zero doubt he is, I just much preferred the far more aggressive style of Doug Melvin. Now if DS would ever acquire some of that trait...now we're talking.

Edit - Please refrain from name calling.
