MLB To Require Housing For Minor Leaguers

My wife and I went to an April Trats game a few years ago. It was a doubleheader because the day before was snowed out. I counted 15 people in the stands when we were there. Attendance is nice June-August but they have to be taking a major loss in April and May.

That's about right. I like to go to early season games because you can just walk up and get a ticket. I don't have to plan ahead, can buy cheap tickets and sit in the best seats. I looked up the attendance record for 2019- which is the last season no effected by covid- and they had 218,037 show up all season. That's well below 50% capacity for the year.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

I'd imagine a small handful of the more popular & better run Minor League franchises make a nice little profit every year, but I believe for the overwhelming majority it's more of a labor of love where breaking somewhere close to even financially is considered a "good" season.

Very likely tied to the minor league level. Probably a pretty good bet that AAA in larger markets make a nice profit every year, but the further one moves down the ladder into smaller markets, the less money there is to be made.

CBA doesn't really cover the minors and I doubt the MLBPA really cares about the minor league players well at least not enough unless it was hurting their portion of the CBA.

Just to be clear: no union negotiating a new CBA is worrying about individuals that are not members.

They are focused on those people that are members of the bargaining unit and those that have retired from the unit (in that order)...

I have seen too many 2 tier wages setups where existing members get an hourly wage rate multiple dollars higher then a new worker doing the exact same job right to the existing member..

I was shafted out of my job of 20 years with a Fortune 100 company, and it's also a "union" shop. I have a Federal lawsuit filed against them and the so called "union" there. Believe me, unions aren't anything like they were years back. A large # of them are corrupt in some way, shape, and/or form, only care about $$$$, and couldn't care less about actual dues paying members. Unfortunately, I know this to be fact, from my own experiences, and things I've seen others get shafted by the union on.

Right, I know the MLBPA isn’t going to be lobbying for nonmember rights, but I was thinking it was more a preemptive PR move from the MLB if things get nasty.

Similar to how Amazon now runs ads showcasing people who parlayed a warehouse job into a college education while defending against unionization.

MLB union isn't the same thing as John Deere's union. MLB union is literally the players, they call the shots.

I imagine most milb teams are nothing more than tax write-offs for wealthy people who don't really 'care' if it makes money.

It's all about the weather...

If you have decent weather for April, the crowds are there. Not like June-August, but I've been to April games that were packed, depending on give-away and weather.

Same with May, although May is always far better than April.

Sounds like the one I was at quite some time ago. Froze my butt off.

I decided April was probably a bit early for me.
