If they win out (including the B1G tournament), they are probably a 1 seed. Lose once and they are a 2 seed, lose twice they are a 3 seed, lose three times and they are a 4 or 5 seed. Lose 4 and they are a 6 seed or worse.

Real bush league stuff right there from Howard. Don’t want Gard to call a late timeout to instruct his bench scrubs? Then don’t leave half your starters in to full court press when down 15 with 15 seconds left.

Regardless, totally inexcusable handshake line behavior. Classless. Warrants a pretty significant suspension at the least.

I couldn't tell if Gard was trying to explain or pissed at Howard or both. He and Krabbenhoff probably just need to move on their way there, but obviously that's just horrible from Howard. And yeah, he's the instigator all around.

I think players from UW will avoid suspension. Neath looked like he was shoving a bit, but everyone else looked pretty well clear/effectively held back.

Not long ago, I was sure Howard would have a long, successful at Michigan. Things have unraveled quickly.

It's college, not the NBA. He has to be aware that timeouts to teach or put in walk-ons, or any other reason aren't uncommon or meant as disrespect. Strike two to escalate into a confrontation rather than just mention his distaste, then strike three on the contact. Send him home for the season.

I mean... unless someone said something in the line that shouldn't have been said, Howard was 100% outta line here. I know I got the homer goggles on, but like others have said, if you don't want the other guys calling a timeout, stop running full press. Soft babies that can't play to the final whistle. Howard shouldn't coach again this season.

From a non homer point of view:

I don’t agree with Howard being upset with that…he was playing his team 100%, don’t be mad when you get it back from the other side. Clearly he then made some snippy comments in the line, was going to walk away without a handshake or a conversation. Pretty lame and uncalled for.

That being said Gard grabbing him wasn’t really in the right either and certainly caused things to spill over. I’d expect Wisco to proactively suspend Gard/Neath as it looks better that way versus the NCAA doing it. Howard’s certainly has got some issues though.

It's like those actuarial car crashes. No one is ever 100% at fault. Set the ratio how you want. For me, maybe 25% is on Gard/Krabby/etc. for not walking away. Let Juwan be mad. Whatever. The rest, though, is just a Michigan team that isn't very good looking for an excuse to get mad. If Howard had hit anyone but a built former player who himself has an imposing presence, no doubt he'd be fired. As is, he'll probably be suspended multiple games, and that will probably be light, especially given that he doubled down on all of it at the post game presser.

Should Gard or anyone on UW get a suspension? I don't know. I can see a game for Gard to send a message, but I think that's more about optics than anything. Having him issue a statement owning his part in it ("I have to be better, I represent the university, our young men handled it better than I did, blah, blah, blah") seems more appropriate.

At that point did Gard know that HOward was upset? I'm not saying he did or didn't. I'm actually asking to ask. If he didn't know at that moment in time that Howard was like "LEGIT MAD!" about a silly timeout, he could have seen Howard giving him the cold shoulder in the handshake line and just being like "hey man what's up?"

If Howard is that soft that a guy in a packed building surrounded by security putting his hand on his elbow is cause to throw hands, he's got super deep issues.

I get it, don't put your hands on people, and if Gard already knew that there was some provocation, then yeah, keep ya hands to yourself.

Michigan was pressing fouling and didn't even clear their bench. Howard can go pound sand.

Well he knew Howard was upset. Howard said “I’ll remember that.” and it looks like Howard MIGHT have actually been going for the handshake after saying that…but hard to know for sure.

Howard wanted to take his little shot at Gard and walk off. Gard really didn’t have any of that and stopped him. It’s hard to know if Gard was going to have a constructive conversation/explanation…but obviously it escalated into a full blown yelling match quickly. Certainly, it’s not easy to let someone make come dumb comment at you and let them just walk away like that. Especially when the guy making the comment is quite in the wrong, for the most part.

I agree with all of this. Gard was pissed that Howard passed him by, felt disrespected or whatever, so he physically detained him while making it clear he was really pissed (he looked angrier than Howard at the outset). None of it happens if he just lets it go, or at a mininum de-escalates instead of triggering/escalating it. At a minimum he should apologize and realize he could have done better, anything more I don't know. Howard's problems of course are way way more severe.

I understand this POV but I also guarantee you that Tom Izzo, Bo Ryan, and many a coach would have done or have done the exact same thing. I've seen coaches not happy with each other stop each other in line to talk before - that's not unprecedented. Grabbing someone by the shirt, much less taking a swing, is not something I've ever seen.

What Bobby Knight would have done I would have paid money to see...
