This was always going to be a bad matchup. I also thought Purdue would be given their size and Crowl and Vogt both fouled out of that one. Luckily Johnny Davis went nuclear that game

Even before the Badgers surprised us we knew they were going to struggle again teams with quality bigs this season. The Badgers aren't very deep there and really aren't very deep overall, not surprising when they lost so many seniors. But the tourney is about matchups and they might only need to take down one team like Illinois/Purdue to get to the final four if things fall their way. Not that I really have high hopes for that or anything but having a star like Davis sure makes it interesting.

Gard needs to be more flexible with switching up defenses. You cannot let one guy dominate you like that in college basketball without trying other things. Heck, even Hack a Kofi would have been preferable to him wearing down Crowl and Vogt.

If they play Illinois in the Big Ten Tournament, they will double more. I've given up on any type of zone, but they have doubled or shown on better big men from time to time.

Yah, he really didn't give much of an effort on defense to stop Kofi. However, every time they did Illinois got a nice jumper for a bucket. Illinois was doing just enough in the mid-range and from beyond the arc, I am not sure it would have mattered much.

Personally, when a big guy dominates you like that, you gotta get him on the other end of the court. Try to get him in foul trouble from his defense or try to wear him down. In that aspect, the Badgers just didn't do much if anything at all.

I am extremely confident that they would have shot worse on jumpshots versus Kofi layups. Also, you have to switch it up to at least try and keep them off balance.

Wonder if Davis is starting to press a little bit?

I think a lot of it is teams know. Don't give Johnny good looks. And they will sell out to stop it. It's a good strategy. If Crowl is making threes or Wahl is getting little 9-foot bank shots, fine. Maybe they make enough to get you, but it's better than letting Davis dominate.

That's how I'd defend the Badgers anyway. Davis gets doubled. Someone's always ready to close on Davison. Make guys who can't score score. Penn State did exactly that, and it nearly got them a good road win against a better team.

The Big Ten is really well-scouted. I expect Davis will go off for 30 again a couple times, but nobody will make it easy.

winning on the road against Purdue and Michigan State in the same season is no small feat
