Punched a wall with his pitching hand? Oof.

Per Adam McCalvy…

Devin Williams is being placed on the 10-day IL with a fractured right hand. He told us he had too much to drink after Sunday’s celebration, got upset about something and punched a wall with his pitching hand. He will need surgery.

“If I could take it back, I would.”

Not just “at Night” anymore.

From Will Sammon…

Huge blow to the Brewers: Devin Williams fractured his pitch hand after punching a wall, he told media today. He’s out the rest of the year. If the Brewers make the World Series, there’s a chance he could be back for it, David Stearns said.

Devin Williams said he had a couple of drinks and out of frustration he punched the wall. There was no altercation, Stearns said. This happened on Sunday after the Brewers’ celebration. The severity wasn’t known until today. It requires surgery.

Williams: “I’m pretty upset with myself, there’s no one to blame but me. I feel like I’ve let my team down, our coaching staff, our fans, everyone. I know how big of a role I play on this team and there’s a lot of people counting on me.”

“I guess all I can do now is cheer my team on and learn from it and don’t make that same mistake in the future.”

Wow... don't think this puts a ceiling on what this team can accomplish but certainly makes the hill a little steeper.

That looked like an uncomfortable session with Stearns and Williams talking to reports together. Like a parent reprimanding their child and making them go apologize to the stranger they did wrong.

Instant overreaction is I wonder if this is the beginning of the end for Williams in Milwaukee. Hader seems like the bullpen arm everybody thinks about trading, but Williams has actually been somewhat unreliable with his health and doesn't dominate quite as much as Hader does. Brewers could get a huge haul given his contract situation and would still have a dominate pen given Josh is still around.

I’m not going to pile on the guy.

I will.

He and his teammates are finishing up an incredible regular season. Getting through injuries, COVID protocols, the whole grind to be in this position.

They have WS potential, despite the tepid September performance. He has to know he's a huge reason for that. And to do something that absolutely moronic because he can't hold his liquor? It almost defies belief.

I get all that and think your position is a fair one to have of an adult. But if you're getting so drunk that you throw your most prized possession into a wall...probably a bigger issue going on.
