You can add the Braves and Brewers to the list of teams who asked the Pirates about Bryan Reynolds prior to the trade deadline, as The Athletic’s Rob Biertempfel hears from a source that Pittsburgh received “big-time offers” from the two clubs.

I love how the Pirates are hanging onto him as the cornerstone of their rebuild which won't be done (if ever) by the time he's too expensive for them to keep.

Not sure the Pirates would have wanted Hiura but I guess it's possible....more likely package was built around Mitchell if i had to guess. It would have taken a haul to get him....and obviously what every was offered wasn't enough......especially to trade him within the division.

Another outfielder?

Where would he have played?

The outfield.

Guessing they would have kicked someone like Yelich to first. I suppose Garcia could have gone to first as that logjam would have been unjammed with Garcia leaving in the offseason. I doubt they would have got Reynolds and then stuck him at 1B.

Reynolds can play all three OF positions and switch hits so he would have played a lot. I'm guessing they would have booted JBJ or Cain (or made Pitt take one and then Brewers pay the salary) and sent Taylor down

Ahh, at first I only saw LF on his BRef.

Definitely would have been the starting CFer.

The Brewers are nothing if not opportunistic and the Pirates like to give away good players for cheap. Reynolds would have immediately become our best position player.

To me the biggest implication is that the Brewers were already trying to solve the Jackie Bradley Jr problem in July.

Man, I love how Stearns operates. He just wants to add good players and will let CC figure it out.

If there was concerns about playing time on our side or needed an OF back for the Pirates, Taylor could have been in the deal.

I went to spotrac to see if they had any overpaid veterans we would have swapped JBJ with as part of the deal.

The Pirates only have one overpaid player, Gregory Polanco. So basically an OF for OF, so that wasn't as likely an option to unload JBJ to them. Polanco has since been released by Pitt.

They don't have anybody else making any money other than Felipe Vazquez. And it looks like he is not getting paid as he is now playing for the Florida/Arizona/Missouri Penal League.

That owner is making mucho dinero with that payroll.

Generous to assume they would have any need or interest finding big contracts to swap. What is the point....really is none. Especially on a contending team. Why bother swapping trash...just dump the trash. Guessing they would have just sent JBJ into orbit without much thought or had him as a straight dump onto the Pirates.

The offer probably had to include some of our top tier prospects but JBJ + cash could have also been included. If Brewers were still paying a large chunk of that contract then could be a lot of low-risk upside for Pirates. If he starts to hit next year could flip him again and if not, doesn't matter because Brewers paying a large chunk and you aren't trying to win anyways.

This would’ve been a huge splash. Have to imagine names like Mitchell and Ashby were involved in those conversations.

I also think acquiring switch hitters is something we’ll see the Brewers will prioritize over the next few years. Obviously they made that trade for Escobar, and attempted this trade for Reynolds. With how much they like to stack lineups with the platoon advantage it makes sense to have some switch hitters on the roster.

Not just “at Night” anymore.
