Game 3: Packers @ 49ers - Sunday, September 26th 7:20pm

Tyler Lancaster is having a great series

I think that must be Trevor Lancaster. Tyler Lancaster has never made a play like that in his career.

Tyler Lancaster has 1.5 sacks and 3 TFL in his career. He should be credited with another half of a sack, along with two tackles on running plays on that series alone.

I get being aggressive - but you take the points there

The NFL has really shifted to aggressive on downs like that in the last few years. I think it is mostly because fans like it so there isn’t much blowback for the coach. I would like to see our coach play the percentages though.

It's not because fans like it. It's because of the analytics boom providing evidence that punting from the 44 yard line doesn't really help you and giving the opponent the ball inside their own 5 is a good enough consolation prize that it's worth trying to pickup an extra 4 points.

Without knowing the numbers you are talking about I would point out there this a big difference between 4th and goal at the one and 4th and one at the 20 yet coaches go for both all the time now. The 5 is more of gray area but what sticks with me is you may end up settling for a FG anyway even if you convert.

What is Collinsworth worth talking about? That was totally catchable without grabbing his arm.

It probably wasn't for him.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Yep. This. Even if you fail you're 20 yards ahead in field position of where you'd be if you take the 3. It's well worth going for the extra 4 points as the field position in the worst case scenario partially offsets the fail possibility.

Of course it's all situational. In a 16-10 game with 5 minutes left in the 4th, of course you're taking the 3.

If I'm the Niners I start Lance and play him the whole second half.

How was that not intentional grounding on the play before the TD? Didn’t make it back to the LOS and no eligible receiver anywhere close to the ball.

I was wondering the same thing. I kept looking for the replay to see if they had a TE in blocking or something, but no one seemed to blink that the ball didn't go anywhere.
