The three best

Bulldogboy
I never said he was dumb. That came out of your mouth, not mine. In fact he is an intelligent manager. He saw the success that KC had when they went to the World Series x2 and expanded upon it with the way he used Hader, Knebel, Jeffress and adding Woodruff, Burns and Houser to the bullpen in the playoffs -Brilliant . But as time went on he moved away from that successful plan….probably had to, to strengthen the starting rotation and the desires of Burnes, Woodruff, and Hader to be used in more traditional roles for their big payday. These windows are short, especially when the players are young and the payroll cheap. What bothers me about Counsell is that he sticks players in the same role when it is obvious to almost everyone that changes are required. I really believe this goes back to the time near the end of his career when his manager stuck with him when he went through a 0-59 stretch. He needs to be more of a manager/management than a friend.

You literally said "He is what he is in 2021 and any intellegent manager with deal with him in that way." How in the heck else is that to be interpreted? LOL

That was in response to your comment”…..the threat of his bat needs to be at the forefront of the opposition’s mind.” What I was attempting to say is that the oppositions’s manager doesn’t look at the 2021 Yelich as the 2018-2019 version, and his “fear of Yelich” will not be the same as the past and most intelligent opposition managers will treat him that way.To hope that he will return to that MVP type player this year has a miniscule chance of happening in the next 5-6 weeks and hoping that he will is foolish.

Now that I re-read, I understand what you're saying. Sorry, my bad.

I don't think there is much of any chance he suddenly turns into MVP Yelich, but if he can be a guy who gets on base at a .400 clip and maybe runs into a few once the playoffs start, that is useful. Not "needs to be batting #3 in the lineup every day" useful, but not really that much a detriment to the lineup either. It is what it is I guess.

Agreed.

It will be pretty deflating if Taylor is on the bench tomorrow night after two dingers today.

Won't shock me in the least, as that has happened countless times in CC's tenure.

And he's almost always right, including tonight. Just one more game I'm blessed to have CC running the team rather than the bf.net consensus.

Can any of you stat guys look up how often a Brewers player has hit 2 homers in a game, then been benched the following game?

Question is from the IGT, but figured it seemed somewhat relevant to this topic so here's the answer...

2 HR Player | Date | Benched | Next Game Result

Cain | April 7 | NO | (0-4, Loss)

Vogelbach | April 18 | YES | (Win)

Nottingham | May 2 | YES | (Loss)

Wong | June 1 | NO | (0-2, Win)

Taylor | June 1 | YES | (0-1 PH, Win)

Urias | June 30 | YES | (Win)

Rowdy | July 24 | NO | (1-4, Loss)

Manny | July 29 | YES | (Won)

Manny | August 12 | NO | (2-3, Loss)

Urias | August 12 | YES | (Loss)

Avisail | August 18 | NO | (0-2, Loss)

Yelich | August 21 | NO | (2-5, Win)

Escobar | September 10 | NO | (0-4, Win)

Wong | September 12 | NO | (0-4, Loss)

Manny | September 18 | YES | (Loss)

Taylor | September 23 | YES | (Win)

So if I counted right there have been 16 different instances of a Brewer player having a 2 HR game this year. Eight times that player has started the next game & eight times they have not.

Twice two players hit 2 HR in the same game & both times one sat & one started the next game & the Brewers went 1-1 in those games.

Of the eight players that did start the next game after their 2 HR game, none of them hit a HR & they went a combined 5-29 so their heat dissipated quickly with the Brewers going 2-4 in the six games where one 2 HR hitter started the next game.

In the six games the one 2 HR player sat the following game the Brewers went 4-2 in those games.

Too small of a sample to really draw any meaningful conclusions from, but those are the numbers.

I was thinking about this the other night: what if some of Yelich’s problem is because he feeds off of huge, raucous crowds, of which he hasn’t really had any of for two years? Some players have said that they thrive under those conditions. Maybe he’ll bust out in the post-season in these loud, tense ballparks like he did in 2018 and 2019 when the races were heated and the ballparks were packed.

Ok, maybe this belongs more in the Optimism thread. Here’s hoping, though!

Wow, thanks for that information...

So it appears that based on this season alone, you hit 2 homers in a single game, you have a 50/50 chance of being benched the next day.

With a losing record and a .172 batting average the next day if you’re in that lucky 50%!
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

After a homer and a triple yesterday, should Yelich play tonight considering it is also being argued that Yelich is now a platoon player?

but it's not like every guy suddenly forgot every piece of advice he gave
