2021-09-23: Cardinals (Wainwright) at Brewers (Houser) [Brewers lose, 8-5 -- Crew up 5-0 early on two Tyrone Taylor home runs; bullpen scuffles allowing 7 runs]

It has been a long time since the Brewers have had much in the way of an obstacle. Perhaps not coincidentally, they are losing their way a bit in the short term. They seem to be finding an obstacle now, and I think it will serve them well. In fact I think it’s good they’re getting bloodied up a bit now. I’d rather they enter the postseason having already taken a punch and shaken it off than being mentally unprepared for when it inevitably comes.

Now they have to actually, you know, shake it off…

Can somebody please explain to me why Yelich remains in the three spot? He's utterly worthless right now.

Who cares? These games are virtually meaningless.

It’s be nice to be hot going into the post season but maybe this will convince Counsel to rest Boxberger and Cousins a bit in meaningless games so they stay fresh

If this continues, they're going to turn into meaningful games.

Nope. They literally need to lose every game they have left. Not to mention the team behind them have to win virtually every game they have left.

Hell, I would limit the innings of the big dogs and late inning guys and let Gustave, Norris, etc pitch a lot these last 9 games

If the Brewers didn’t have the division locked up this game would be upsetting me.

If we lose today, it really is not hard to come up with a scenario that the Cardinals enter the last series against us with control over their own destiny for the division.

It's actually impossible, because we are 3 wins from clinching regardless of what the cardinals do. So theoretically even if we lose today, all 3 against the mets, all against the Cardinals, we can still sweep the Dodgers and clinch. This is all hypothetical of course. Most likely we clinch this weekend.

Respectfully, I'd rather they enter the post season playing like a team possessed, and scaring the crap out of other National League teams, instead of morphing into the Keystone Cops.

Magic number is 3, so this is not entirely true.

Losing 2 out of 3 to the Mets is plausible and the Cubs sweeping the Cardinals is plausible. That puts us needing to beat the Cardinals in the last series of the season.

Yep, the earliest possible the Brewers could no longer control their own destiny would be with two games to play.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

You're assuming after all that we're going to go into L.A. and sweep the Dodgers?

You're right though I was wrong about the controlling of their own destiny. Forgot about the Dodger series.

We play the Dodgers after the Cardinals.

THIS^^^. Just because you stink today doesn't mean you'll snap out of it tomorrow. And winning big today does not mean you'll slump tomorrow. There's just no up-side at all to not winning right now.

Not hard to come up with the scenario, but pretty hard for that scenario to actually play out.

The Brewers need to pretty much lose out while the Cardinals win out.

Additionally, the Mets team coming to town is playing for absolutely nothing and is playing worse baseball than the Brewers over the past week. The Brewers play the last week or so has been frustrating and not what you want to see heading into the post-season, but the sky isn't falling even if they lose this game.

Counsell has been doing that. We are 2-5 since and making that team picture in their football jerseys the new "sweep suits".
