Wiemer Reaches Base 5 Times (Again!) as Rafters Crush Scottsdale Scorpions 8-1

The Rafters scored in each of the first 3 innings to take a 4-1 lead and then never looked back. After reaching base on all 5 appearances on Friday, Joey Wiemer reached on 5 of 6 appearances today (3-4, 2 walks), while Taylor Floyd also threw a clean inning in the 'pen. Eric Da La Rosa (Tigers' 24-year old OF) homered for the second straight game, while Ryan Vilade (Rockies' 22-year old utility man) went 4-5 with a walk.

Joey Wiemer - RF - 3-4, 2 walks, 1 SB

Taylor Floyd - 1.0 inning, 0 hits, 0 walks, 0 Ks

Wiemer also threw out a runner headed to third base in the first inning

I still have a few doubts. Struck out 26.5% of the time, the same rate as Dan Vogelbach at a higher level. Yelich 28.3% last year. At least he's better then Keston Hiura (44.5%).

Joey Wiemer’s strikeout rate in 2021 (combined across both levels he played) was 22.2%. If you add in his plate appearances in the Arizona Fall League then his strike out rate for all of 2021 drops to 21.7%. It would be great if he could keep it below 25% as he advances levels. In order to do the amount of damage he’s capable of there is likely going to have to be some give-and-take with his strikeout rate.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Wiemer is the type of prospect that if he improves his hit/contact tool, he's an all star. Other side of that coin is if he doesn't keep improving that tool he could flame out as quickly as a prospect because he'll strike out constantly against developed pitching. But his other tools are going to give him plenty of chances to succeed at the big league level - He just looks like a MLB corner OF right now and it's just a matter of him being able to make contact consistently. I think there was some early season helium on his draft stock back in 2020 before COVID shut down the college season, and the Brewers benefitted from him not gaining more attention to pick him where they did.

hopefully he keeps improving/developing and excited to see where he starts the 2022 season!

Ground yourself in this comment above people. I watched Joey hit the walk off home run the last week off the season in Appleton, but before that he had left like 11 men stranded on base with pop ups and strike outs. And that is A plus baseball. He has a lot of work yet to do. That being said, he could be Corey Hart.

Yeah, looks like WVB might have divided Ks by ABs instead of PAs. Wiemer was actually below league average K rate at all three stops this year...

A: 69 K | 320 PAs | 21.6% (league average 25.6 K%)

A+: 36 K | 152 PAs | 23.7% (league average 26.4 K%)

AFL: 5 K | 33 PAs | 15.2% (league average 24.6 K%)

I don't see how the K rate is of any real concern. If he had Joe Gray's K rate then yeah. I am excite.

Hi excite. Sorry couldn't resist it.

I think Wiemer is fine with his current K rate. I am not concerned about it yet as this is his first full year in the minors and I will wait until the end of next season before judging him on his K rate.

Wiemer had 33 runs batted in in 152 PA at Appleton and an OPS of 1.146. Over a full season of 608 PA, that's translates to 132 RBI. You can cherry pick a few AB's over a day or two where he failed to drive in runs, but to suggest he struggled at high A is a stretch. He dominated high A.

He looked like a man among boys in Appleton!

Dare I say, he is going to be a complete stud, and a fixture in our outfield for years to come in the near future! Add him to Gray and Mitchell, and we have the makings for a great, cheap outfield! The future is bright!

I get that you are likely simply trying to exercise caution, but I don't see much reason not to be very excited about Weimer's trajectory. The kid has seemingly ironed out the contact and lack of power issues he had as a college hitter, and has looked like a stud so far. The fact that he continues to look like a stud in the AFL (long seen as a proving ground for prospects who are close to MLB ready) only adds to the helium he has as a prospect.

A big test will be how he does next spring. Lets not forget that he'll already be 23 years old by the time the 2022 season starts. I'm very interested to see where he gets placed. I would expect that if he has a good spring, it'll be Biloxi, with an outside shot at Nashville.

Corey Hart is a very appropriate comparison for Wiemer.

I don't believe he will skip AA and I think the Brewers will place Wiemer in A+ to start the year and then promote him to AA.

Tovar's Homer Propels Rafters to 3-2 Victory over Scorpions (Wiemer - 3 More Hits)

Ezequiel Tovar (Rockies' 20-year old shortstop) hit a second inning 3-run homer to take a 3-1 lead, which held up largely due to the Rafters' bullpen. Joey Wiemer continued his torrid run at the plate (3 hits). Mario Feliciano also had a hit, while three Brewer pitchers contributed (Jarvis, Uribe, Hintzen).

Joey Wiemer - RF - 3-4

Mario Feliciano - C - 1-4

Justin Jarvis - started and was credited with the win - 2.0 innings, 1 run (earned), 1 hit, 2 walks, 1 HBP, 1 K

Abner Uribe - 1.0 inning, 1 run (earned), 1 hit, 2 walks, 3 Ks, 1 wild pitch

J.T. Hintzen - 1.0 inning, 0 runs, 0 hits, 0 walks, 0 Ks

Feliciano threw out 1 of 2 runners trying to steal, while having no passed balls

Hintzen has been an under the radar prospect this year and had a nice finish to the season. His K/9 of 12.3 look great as well as the other peripherals, except for the homers. Homers have never been a problem for him in the past, but sure bit him this year. He needs to be protected from the Rule 5 draft this year so I wonder if the Brewers will protect him. I would not have thought so, but his inclusion in the AFL makes me think they view him higher than I thought.

Rafters Give Up 4 in 9th to Lose on Walk-Off 8-7 to Saguaros

The Rafters clawed back from a 4-0 second inning deficit, scoring 1 in the 5th, 2 in the 7th and then pulling ahead 7-4 via 4 runs in top of the 9th, only to give it all back and lose on a walk-off 2-out single. Brett Baty (Mets' 21-year old third baseman drafted 12th overall in 2019) hit a 2-run homer in the top of the 9th to grab the temporary lead. Joe Gray's misery continues (0-4, 3 Ks), while Taylor Floyd was the only other Brewer to see action.

Joe Gray Jr. - 0-4, 1 walk (1 hit in 26 AFL at-bats = .038 AVG)

Taylor Floyd - 1.0 inning, 0 runs, 1 hit, 0 walks, 1 K

Rafters Lose Second Straight Walk-Off, 6-5 to Javelinas (Hintzen Injured and Takes Loss)

For the second game in a row, the Rafters clawed back from an early deficit, only to blow it in the late innings. First baseman Michael Toglia (Rockies - 23rd overall pick in 2019) blasted a 3-run homer in the 6th to take a 3-2 lead. Down 4-2 and facing their final out, the Javelinas hit consecutive doubles to send the game to extra innings.

J.T. Hintzen got the call leading 5-4 in the bottom of the 10th, then walked a batter, got hit by a line drive and came out of the game.

With the bases loaded (free runner to start the inning) and nobody out, 20-year old Brewer Lun Zhao stepped in and old friend Cooper Hummel promptly allowed a passed ball to tie the game. An intentional walk re-loaded the bases and Zhao tried again to stage a Great Escape, nearly doing so: ground balls to second and shortstop resulted in both runners being thrown out at home. However, a single to center field ended the game at 6-5.

J.T. Hintzen took the loss - 0.0 innings, 2 runs (1 earned), 1 hit, 1 walk, 0 Ks

Lun Zhao - 0.2 innings, 0 runs, 1 hit, 1 walk (intentional), 0 Ks
