Arizona Fall League

Madhawk23
I just saw that they released the AFL schedule for next month, and it got me curious as to when the Brewers might reveal which players will be participating this year. Anyone have any thoughts on who we might send to this? Is Mitchell an option, especially with all of the time he missed this year? Do we even know what his injury situation was? What other prospects do we think might be good candidates to play this year?

Zack Brown only pitched 22 innings this year - he's probably a good candidate. Dylan File missed some time; could see him going. Small missed some time too, only 70 IP this year.

I think Small is still injured with the tendon in one of his fingers.

According to the AFL rules: A player on an MLB or minor league injured list must be reinstated before he can be assigned to the AFL.

I am not sure if Small has been reinstated from the injured list.

Brown I agree with he will more than likely be added as a pitcher along with File. Position players that I could see being put on the AFL include:

Turang, Howell, Dillard, Lutz, Gray, Wiemer, Feliciano (if he is reinstated from the IL), Warren and Mitchell.

Not all of them will make it onto the AFL roster but I think Turang or Howell are locks. Depending on Feliciano's and Mitchell's health they could also be locks. I wouldn't be surprised if Lutz/Gray and Wiemer would be in the OF in the AFL over Mitchell.

Mitchell and Ray are obvious options. Turang or Howell or another IF might be nice. Maybe Bello due to injury

Mitchell, Turang, and Howell yes. 27 year old Ray? Not even a consideration.

Howell is a super fun prospect who is just getting started.

Does anyone think we’ll see some of the recent draft picks who’ve yet to play?:

- LHP 2nd rounder Russell Smith

- RHP 4th rounder Logan Henderson

- RHP 6th rounder Carlos Rodriguez

Outside of them, I’m guessing we may see guys like Sal Frelick, Tyler Black, Wes Clarke (if healthy) and Jefferson Figueroa.

I’m not sure of current rules, but it used to be that an organization was only allowed one guy that was below AA as of Aug 1. We also don’t know which positions were designated as priorities for the Brewers.

I think that rule has been removed and all players are now eligible except those who are on their home country's reserve team in the winter ball leagues.

Thanks for the clarification that it’s typically higher-level guys who participate in the AFL. Well, here’s hoping Garrett Mitchell is healthy then. Maybe we’ll see guys like Lutz and Feliciano who both missed some time with injuries.

Cooper Hummel posted that he’ll be playing this year:

Here's who the Brewers will be sending to the Arizona Fall League, along with their MLB Pipeline team prospect ranking:

Joe Gray Jr., OF (No. 9)

Antoine Kelly, LHP (No. 10)

Mario Feliciano, C (No. 13)

Joey Wiemer, OF (No. 23)

Abner Uribe, RHP (No. 26)

Taylor Floyd, RHP

J.T. Hintzen, RHP

Justin Jarvis, RHP

Jolon Zhao, RHP

Would have liked to see Mitchell, but overall this is a nice group. Excited to see if Gray and Wiemer especially can keep their breakouts going. Also nice to see guys like Kelly and Feliciano, who missed major time due to injuries.

It's great to know that Abner Uribe is healthy again, as he last pitched in a game on July 22nd. We've basically rewarded our Position Player of the First Half (Joe Gray) and Position Player of the Second Half (Joey Wiemer), then found more at-bats for Mario Feliciano.

I understand that we don't want to burn out starting pitchers, so it makes sense to see Taylor Floyd and J.T. Hintzen. Justin Jarvis is an interesting final choice, going with a young guy who made 17 starts this year. Tom Haudricourt listed Jolon (Lun) Zhao as being on the taxi squad.

All right, now who's going to Winter Leagues in Australia, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Nicaragua...? :)

Interesting to see Zhao getting the selection. I wonder if that means the Brewers are looking to bring him to low A at some point next year?

With all due respect, where else would they send him next year?

Arizona rookie league. He pitched in the DSL this year. Going from the DSL to AFL is interesting as that is a large jump from the type of competition he was facing previously. His highest level has been the rookie leagues. So if he is going to the AFL the team may see him as a candidate to be in low A at some point next year.

He could also be placed in instructional until the rookie league starts up. But I think they probably keep him at extended spring training and then move him to low A at some point.

He did not pitch in the DSL this year. He pitched in the AZL and Rk in 2018 as a 16-year-old. Came back and repeated the ACL only because of the long layoff due to Tommy John and shortened season due to visa issues. If he had a full season this year he would have surely pitched in Carolina and possibly even Wisconsin depending on his success. Them moving him to Rk as a 16-year-old back in 2018 shows that he is very polished for his age. Still not sure where you got DSL from but just giving my observations.

It will be interesting, given how few innings he has thrown, if they try to stretch Zhao out or just make him a reliever at this point. They must be impressed if they sent him to the AFL. If it was just about getting more innings, they could have done that in instructs.

Otherwise, nothing that stands out too much. Kelly, Hintzen and Floyd seemed like solid bets (building up innings for Kelly and top two AA relievers for the others) and if they decided not to send Small, there was destined to be starter who had a kind of ho-hum season on the list (Jarvis). Uribe being healthy is a nice. Never heard what his injury was and was fearing the worst.

Kelly is not taking part in AFL

Hadn't seen that note. Wonder if he will be replaced.

Must have been looking at someone else or remembering someone else and thought it said DSL and not ACL. Was looking at it from my phone so that is my excuse.
