2021-09-22: Cardinals (Mikolas) at Brewers (Anderson) [Brewers lose, 10-2]

Eye Black
My own gauge for nervousness: if the choices were a) have already clinched but had a regular injured or b) get swept by the Cardinals but guarantee health, what would you pick?

I know my choice.

How about winning one game in a four game series with the Cardinals with no regulars getting injured? Why isn’t that possible?

Seems like they are going to be facing more risk of injuries if they go on the road next week still needing a win or two to clinch the division.

Dude. It's a hypothetical.

It's always a fine balance between getting guys game action and keeping everyone healthy. All I am saying is I'd rather stay healthy than win individual games. The individual results are far less important than being healthy for the postseason. That may change next week, but it's true right now and will be at least through Sunday.

Not enjoying them yukking it up and laughing at us in their dugout.

If I played for a mediocre team and was destroying one of the top teams in the majors I'd be happy too.

They're going to be a playoff team. There's little doubt now. I don't really think they're mediocre and if they get Flaherty back and have him to pair with Wainwright I'd definitely take them seriously myself.

Sorry ... I should have said mediocre up to two weeks ago. Because that's exactly what they are. They are getting hot at the right time, but this Cardinal team gives me huge 2019 Brewer vibes.

If they knock off both the dodgers and giants, ill gladly tip my cap to them and then also feel pretty good about the pitching advantage the Brewers would have on them over a 7 game NLCS. Sorry, these games being played right now just don't make me sweat (or feel overconfident if they were going the other direction) about how things would play out a full month from now in the playoffs if they wind up facing off there.

Yeah, and how’d that 2019 season end again? I must have missed how being the hottest team in September guarantees you postseason glory. I would have very much liked to have seen our parade.

That's my point. The 2019 Brewers were a very mediocre team that got scorching hot in September. Then they lost the Wild Card game.

My guess is the Cardinals are looking at a similar fate.

I'm nowhere as concerned about the pitching as I am the hitting.

They are coming down the stretch like they came out of the gate.

Feeble and inept at the plate.

I have no faith in them scoring against good pitching and decent defense.

I mean, they can't score against junk pitchers. We may see a lot of 2-1-type games come playoff time if this doesn't improve. Better hope that the 3 aces and top pen guys are ready to bring it.

This offense was always going to be capable of scoring 2 runs in 3 NLDS games and crushing us. Every team has an Achilles and I think that is ours this year. If we bow out early I suspect that will be why. Of course sometimes it's a pretty good offense. But it definitely can vanish for stretches. Hopefully September 22 and not October 10.

I’m sort of curious to see them face good pitching again. They’ve gotten shutdown this week, but it’s been by mostly below average starters.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

You cannot underestimate how much Yelich being bad hurts this team's chances. You can't win a world series without a stud bat. Avi Garcia ain't exactly what we signed up for imo as good as he's been.

Since late-2019, Yelich has been Ian Happ.

So, yeah. If he's not a stud, you really need to get lucky to score a ton of playoff runs.

3 for 32 with 1 double. Pretty bad stretch again. 2 hrs since Aug 1st.

It is rare, but the Royals and Giants (twice) have won championships without a superstar stud in the lineup in the last decade.

That Royals team was DEEP, though. Giants too. I get the point, of course.

I just think those offenses were probably better than this one? Just a gut reaction...

That Royals team scored 724 runs, 6th in the AL.

Brewers have scored 695 runs, with 12 games left, 5th in the NL

Tired: “The Cardinals were determined to not let the Brewers clinch the division in front of them this week.”

Wired: The Brewers were determined to wait to clinch the division against the Cardinals in front of their self appointed “best fans in baseball.”

Not just “at Night” anymore.
