2021-09-22: Cardinals (Mikolas) at Brewers (Anderson) [Brewers lose, 10-2]

Eye Black
At what point do even the most optimistic fans think that the Brewers are playing themselves into a dicey situation?

For me, if after one week from tonight the evening ends and the Brewers are entering their final four games still needing 2+ wins I’ll start to get slightly nervous.

More concerning at the moment is the obvious that I’d like to see the offense putting good at bats together more consistently. That, and if Brett Anderson doesn’t pitch again I’d be good with it.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

I have no worries about losing the division, but I think anyone saying this isn't at all concerning is putting on a bit of a show of bravado. The 2nd place Cardinals danced on our field in 2011 and this is certainly at least causing flashbacks. These guys know they can beat us. Yeah, we may not see each other again, but we might.

It's also going to be interesting that the Brewers end with 3 in LA. So it could very well be the Brewers that give the Cards SF and not the Dodgers, thus potentially leaving both of them in the field.

Of course I'm of the position that we have a lot of great teams to beat and it doesn't matter who they are. But this isn't concerning at all? At ALL? I don't buy it.

Oh, I want no part of the Cardinals. Losing to the Giants is way preferable to losing to the Cards, and I don't much like either of those teams.

Still, that is a totally emotional response. I don't think this series is all that predictive. Cards won two close games and are now up 6-0 in a game where we started a guy who won't sniff the postseason. And we haven't thrown Hader or Williams.

I don't like it. I don't want the Cards. But this is an 8-7 season series if the score holds tonight. That doesn't feel very predictive to me.

Come on you know you would get nervous before that. If we lose out this week and they win out all of us will be in panic mode.

There is No way do you want to play the Cards in these playoff. This team better wake up and realize that there is still baseball to play. Well I can think we could almost rule Anderson being on the post season roster. This has to be the worst time for a team falling flat on its face.

Momentum often carries over into the offseason and you never want to be free falling heading into the playoffs.

The fact that we are 30 games over 500 and will trail the season series against these guys isn't a source of major comfort if we play them.

The Brewers would be 40 games over .500 if they didn't play the royals, tigers, or twins....does that make the cards dregs, too?

Just got here. Something tells me I should avoid going back to read the whole thread. Just a hunch ...

Me too…I’m guessing it is a bunch of people freaking out about the performance of a starter who will start zero games in the postseason. Just a guess though.

We are 3-1 against the Dodgers. In no way do I think we're the better roster.

Go back and look at the box scores for those games played in April. The lineups for both teams are very different than the ones playing now, so those games have zero relevance or predictive value for the postseason.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

Sort of like a game with Anderson starting for the Brewers like tonight, huh?

My own gauge for nervousness: if the choices were a) have already clinched but had a regular injured or b) get swept by the Cardinals but guarantee health, what would you pick?

I know my choice.

How about winning one game in a four game series with the Cardinals with no regulars getting injured? Why isn’t that possible?

Seems like they are going to be facing more risk of injuries if they go on the road next week still needing a win or two to clinch the division.

My point exactly.

The Cardinals leading the season series 8-7 just doesn't feel meaningful to me.

Not enjoying them yukking it up and laughing at us in their dugout.

If I played for a mediocre team and was destroying one of the top teams in the majors I'd be happy too.

They're going to be a playoff team. There's little doubt now. I don't really think they're mediocre and if they get Flaherty back and have him to pair with Wainwright I'd definitely take them seriously myself.

Dude. It's a hypothetical.

It's always a fine balance between getting guys game action and keeping everyone healthy. All I am saying is I'd rather stay healthy than win individual games. The individual results are far less important than being healthy for the postseason. That may change next week, but it's true right now and will be at least through Sunday.
