That was a weak offensive effort. You have to have baserunner against Lester. Make him think about the running game at least. 3 hits...not gonna cut it.

Cardinals and good and came to play. They are rolling through a hard schedule. Credit to them.

Reset button for the Brewers. Reality is, one win turns this whole thing around, and we're all back to anticipating champagne. Go get it tomorrow. I think the Brewers clinch on Thursday.

I want to try and care that we lost but I really don’t. They are on cruise control and I can’t blame them, they’ve earned it.

They shouldn’t be on cruise control yet.

If the Brewers are on cruise control 7 losses to the Cardinals are a near certainty. It takes a focused effort to beat a good team that is hot and playing sound fundamental baseball.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

The Brewers obviously have a superior pitching staff but the Cardinals offense is probably better, particularly with the 1-2 punch of Goldschmidt and Arenado.

If they have a better offense than the Brewers, they haven’t shown it over the course of the season. The Cardinals rank 24th in MLB in runs scored per game (4.24), just behind the Royals and just ahead of the Dbacks, Orioles, Mets, Marlins, Rangers, and Pirates. The Brewers are 10th overall in runs scored per game (4.64) and 5th best in the NL.

These Cardinals takes tonight feel like the epitome of recency bias. They’ve had a good stretch lately, but they’ve also had their share of struggles throughout the season. A few weeks ago the Braves were the hot team in the NL and everyone in the AL was saying “here come the Yankees.” Then their hot streaks ended and those teams went back to being something more closely resembling what they’ve been over the course of the season. I expect something similar from the Cardinals.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

The Brewers are 6-4 in their last 10 - that's not cruise control. It'd be great if they win at a 0.900 clip the rest of the way, but frankly it's more important they get key guys right for the postseason than try to grind out every ballgame into a win. It was great seeing Adames back in the lineup today - hoping Cain and Rowdy get back soon, too.

Give the Cards credit for getting white hot at the right time and hoping they hold their own enough against the Brewers in their final 6 head to head matchups to avoid losing the WC2 spot, which likely will earn them a trip out west to face Mad Max or a trip to San Fran in a wild card game, only to be followed by a short series best of 5 against the other of those two teams.

When we get to this stage of the season recent and current performance becomes more important than season long statistics. Since August 1, the Brewers and Cardinals have virtually identical numbers of runs scored and runs allowed. The Cardinals have scored 218 runs to the Brewers 217, and both have allowed 171 runs. The Brewers are 29-16 over that stretch and the Cardinals are 28-17.

But, over the last week, the Cardinals offense is hot and the Brewers offense is not. As Counsell noted in his post game comments last night, the Brewers have had a “dry week” at the plate except for a couple of innings (which came against the Cubs). That means that the pitching has to be almost perfect for the Brewers to win.

Unless the offense comes out of this funk, or the pitchers can come up with a shutout or 1 run game against a potent offense, the Brewers aren’t going to win a game in this series, regardless of how many runs they have scored over the course of the season.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

Exactly. The Reds did the same thing in July, and many a poster here was ready to crown them division champs. It's a 162-game season. Teams get hot and cold. But in the end, talent wins out. And the Brewers are a substantially more talented team than the Cardinals.

If they don't, it will obviously cause some consternation among the fanbase. But in the scheme of the season, it isn't likely to matter. The Cardinals are on a hot streak. They'll cool off ... simply because they aren't an overly talented club. They are playing WAY over their heads right now. Their starting rotation is being held together by duct tape and binder twine. They are getting timely hits, and eeking out a lot of close wins. It will eventually catch up with them. Because it's baseball.

Like you said in the thread that you started, it’s time to wrap up the division.

Last week at this time the talk was about whether the Brewers would clinch the division before they came home. I was hoping to see the clincher on Sunday. I didn’t expect the Brewers offense to take the week off or for the Cardinals to waltz through 6 games against supposed playoff contenders. I was looking forward to two weeks of following the other playoff races while the Brewers had their spot locked up.

A sweep in this series would definitely cause some consternation, if not aggravation. It would raise the very real possibility that a suddenly tight Brewers team would be going to St. Louis still needing a win to wrap things up.

Just score some runs and win a game and get it over with. It shouldn’t be that difficult for a team that people think can win 100 games and be a serious World Series contender.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

You aren't wrong. It most definitely IS time to get things over with. But that is the frustrated, impatient fan in me talking. This team is getting healthy again. Hopefully Adames finds his groove, and they can get Taylor up soon to provide another solid OF bat, and get the lineup going again. It would be nice if Narvaez came out of his funk as well.

My Cardinal takes and hate are the exact opposite of recency bias. They were born in the World Series of 1982, simmered for a while, then warmed up again when the Cardinals took the Brewers out of the playoffs in the last 15 years. They boiled over when I took a job in St. Louis and had to exist at the water cooler with the BFIB and their sanctimonious bs about their team and fandom. After my first game at Busch, I was generous in my praise for the stadium, the area around the park, and the experience, which I really enjoyed. The guy who I was talking to said, "But what did you think about the fans? Don't you think we have the best fans?" Ugh.

No, it's not recency bias for me. It's not rational, either. I will own that.
